Disney will continue licensing games to other companies

Despite the backlash against the Battlefront reboot series, Disney will continue to have other companies publish games.

Disney will continue licensing games to other companies
Since the release of 2015's Star Wars Battlefront, things have not been looking well for Star Wars video games. While the game and its sequel received lukewarm reviews, the original was heavily criticized for its lack of content and use of a $50 season pass. Meanwhile, the sequel caused a huge outroar from both critics and consumers for its use of Microtransactions.

EA has also received heavy flack for canceling an open-world Star Wars title, which was originally being developed by Visceral Games before they were shut down.

However, despite the numerous bad press, Disney CEO Bob Igor commented that they have had a "good relationship" with Electronic Arts. Igor, during Disney's earnings call, also said that they would rather license games to other companies, rather than publish games themselves.

"We’re good at making movies and television shows and theme parks and cruise ships and the like, we’ve just never managed to demonstrate much skill on the publishing side of games," Iger said. "[…W]e’ve found over the years that we haven’t been particularly good at the self-publishing side, but we’ve been great at the licensing side which obviously doesn’t require that much allocation of capital."

The only other Star Wars game in development is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, currently on track for this year and being developed by Respawn Entertainment.
