After a short stream, D23’s first ever Disney & Marvel Games Showcase officially ended. The Showcase debuted with quite a few new games announced. Alongside the world premieres, updates to released games were shown and reminders of upcoming games releasing later this year and in 2023. Sadly games like Marvel’s Spiderman 2, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Kingdom Hearts IV were a no-show, including the rumoured Iron Man game being developed by EA.
Here’s what was announced during the Disney & Marvel Games Showcase:
Untitled Marvel Game Featuring Captain America & Black Panther
The first look at the Marvel game being created by Skydance New Media and Amy Hennig was revealed. It appears the earlier leak was correct in saying that their narrative-driven Marvel game will be centred around Captain America and Black Panther during World War 2. The game will feature locations such as Paris, Wakanda and more.
Currently, the game has no official title but promises to feature four playable characters. They are a young Steve Trevor aka Captain America, Azzuri, T’challa’s Grandfather and the WWII-era Black Panther, Nanali, the leader of the fledgling Wakandan Spy Network, and Gabriel Jones, one of the U.S. soldiers part of the Howling Commandos.
Bithell Games, the developers of Thomas Was Alone have teamed up with Disney for a new game in the Tron universe. Tron: Identity, will be a new visual novel game that follows a detective program named Query. The story involves Query being tasked to solve the mystery of an unprecedented crime. We weren’t shown any gameplay but we were given a release date of sometime in 2023. Tron: Identity will be playable on PC and console.
Disney’s Illusion Island
Another world premiere but this time an exclusive for Nintendo Switch. Disney’s Illusion Island is a 2D platformer that lets you play as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy on a new adventure. The story sees Mickey and company journeying to the mysterious islands of Monoth in search of three mystical books that will prevent the world from falling into disaster.
The game manages to capture the art style of the recent Micky Mouse shorts and includes online, local and split-screen co-op. Disney’s Illusion Island is slated for release in 2023.
As part of Disney’s recent goal to bring back the nostalgic games of old, the 1995 Gargoyles returns. Fully remastered, bringing the classic 90s platformer to modern consoles and PC. This game loosely follows the plot based on Disney’s popular animated series Gargoyles.
Alongside getting a small reminder on Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, we were also graced with a new mobile game. Titled Avatar: Reckoning, the game will be an MMORPG shooter that lets you customise your own Avatar and explore Pandora across multiple game modes. The game currently has no release date but is set to arrive in the near future.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Galactic Edition
The newest Lego game featuring the world of Star Wars, get a new edition coming November 1. It will feature 13 character packs, including six new packs containing fan-favourite characters such as Cassian Andor, Reva, Captain Rex, and more.
We got another look at Disney’s version of the kart racing game, Disney Speedstorm. They showed off a cinematic trailer featuring Mulan, Sully, Mickey Mouse and Captain Jack Sparrow. We also got a look at a Monster’s Inc themed map “The Factory”, alongside the reveal Mike Wazowski, Celia Mae and Randall will be playable characters.
The upcoming free-to-play collectable card game based on the Marvel Universe, will be exiting out of Beta and officially launching on October 18. Marvel’s Snap promises over 150 Marvel heroes and villains to collect as well as shorter average match times than other games in the genre. Players can pre-register for Marvel Snap right now.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns
After announcing that the game would be delayed till 2023, Marvel’s Midnight Suns will now release for new-gen consoles and PC on December 2. Sadly there is still no information on the Nintendo Switch release. However, with this reveal came some new gameplay for the tactical superhero game set in the Marvel Universe. We also got the reveal of the prequel shorts for Marvel’s Midnight Suns, which reveal the backstory on the formation of the young core of the Midnight Suns. This series will release on October 31.
Marvel Strike Force
The squad-based mobile RPG set in the Marvel Universe will be adding some more hulks. Red Hulk will be joining the roster on September 13. Players will be able to recruit Red Hulk as part of Apocalypse’s newest Horsemen of War.
Disney’s Dreamlight Valley
Disney’s Dreamlight Valley is an early access life-sim game that allows players to live in a world populated by Disney and Pixar characters. At the Disney & Marvel Game Showcase will be getting a new Toy Story realm that brings in Buzz Lightyear, Woody, new quests and more.
Aliens: Dark Descent
Aliens: Dark Descent was announced back at the Summer Games Fest Showcase but we didn’t get any gameplay, until now. The Disney & Marvel Showcase gave us a glimpse at the game, alongside how it all works. Currently, Aliens: Dark Descent, is scheduled for release in 2023 for PC and consoles.
Marvel’s World of Heroes
After the great success of Pokemon GO, developer Niantic has revealed their new Marvel AR game. Marvel’s World of Heroes will let players create their own superhero and team up with their favourite Marvel characters in the real world. Players can pre-register now at marvelworldofheroes.com ahead of the global launch on mobile devices in 2023.
Return to Monkey Island
We get another trailer for Return to Monkey Island. It shows snippets of all the past games alongside footage of the new entry to the series. Return to Monkey Island releases on September 19.
The Halloween season will soon be upon Disney Mirrorverse. This is a mobile game that teams up Disney heroes and villains against dark forces in a divergent Disney universe. There will be a Halloween-themed season coming soon, featuring new villain guardians such as Hades and more.
