Captain America 4 has been officially announced, with Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson co-writing the script. Spellman ran the Disney Plus show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s writers’ room, with Musson serving as a staff writer.
It seems Marvel has a lot of faith in Spellman, and for a good reason, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiere was Disney Plus’s biggest series debut ever, and the show has been met with generally positive reviews. Critics and fans highlighted the show’s willingness to talk about the black experience through the lens of a blockbuster superhero tale.
Although no official casting has been revealed, after the events of Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s recent finale, the film will almost certainly star Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America. Mackie has previously played Sam Wilson, AKA Falcon, in five previous MCU films. This would be his first leading role in a Marvel movie.
The previous three Captain America movies starred Chris Evans as the Star-Spangled super soldier, but after his appearance in Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers seems to be gone from the franchise. Though rumours still persist that he will make a return in some form. Joe and Anthony Russo directed Evans in the previous two Captain America films, and although a directorial return to the MCU isn’t off the table for the two brothers, no director for the project has been announced yet.
With no release date, plot, movie title, director, or casting announcements, fans are sure to run wild with speculation until we get more official details. There shouldn’t be too long a wait until the next Marvel announcement, however, as just recently we got a Shang-Chi trailer and release date, and reports that Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke have been cast in Secret Invasion. Disney likes to keep busy!
