After sending out a warning about two months ago, it looks like Blizzcon 2020 is officially canceled. In an update released earlier today, the Executive Producer of Blizzcon, Saralyn Smith, stated that the cancellation was due to health and safety reasons. The Blizzcon crew looked into ways to run the popular convention and “talked about different paths (they) could take, and how each one could be complicated by fluctuations in national and local health guidelines.” Running a convention of this size is just too complicated when taking into account all the health risks.

There is a glimmer of hope in the cancellation. Blizzcon seems to be looking into different ways to bring the Blizzcon spirit to their fans early next year. While they weren’t quite clear on what this means, we hope it means they have something new to share with us, be it for the World of Warcraft expansion, Shadowlands, which will be released sometime in 2020, or a new game release.
Esports fans also need not worry, as Blizzcon staff are looking into ways to keep the same major tournaments that happen at Blizzcon alive and well. The update isn’t clear on when the tournaments would happen, so keep your eyes out here for more updates on Blizzcon and other news!
