According to multiple credible sources and industry insiders, Bethesda’s Starfield will not release in 2021. Rumours have been circulating that this new space RPG is close to being complete and will be set for later this year. These rumours have been contradicted by Jason Schreier in a tweet posted this morning.
Rumors like this keep floating around but Starfield is nowhere near done, according to several ppl familiar with development. It'll be at E3 but the planned release date I've heard is way later than most people expect. Sharing this so that folks keep their expectations in check https://t.co/LVFzmX1XYu

This news comes swiftly after HD images of the game were leaked earlier this week. The person who discovered and posted about these photos clarified that they were taken from a 2018 build, back when they first announced Starfield. These images likely flared suspicions of the game being ready for release, but these sources say otherwise.
With Starfield reportedly being exclusive to Xbox now that Microsoft has bought Bethesda, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see some more news pop up soon. Despite that, these leaked photos are from 3-year-old builds, and Bethesda seems to want to take as much time as needed on this new IP.
The bright side to this news is that Schreier, long-time industry insider, believes Starfield will appear at E3. Schreier continues backing up his statements within the Twitter thread:
Let me make this very clear: Bethesda’s plan is to tease a release date for Starfield at E3. That date is in *late* 2022. I’ll leave the specifics to them. But please keep your expectations in check and refrain from sending death threats when the other rumors turn out to be false.
Schreier and his sources have always been very reputable, so it’s better to keep your expectations for this game on the ground. How excited are you about Starfield? Will it appear at E3? Let me know!
