The latest Nintendo IndieWorld Showcase ran rather smoothly, but the executives had the opportunity to end it with a bang. They chose to do so with an otherworldly announcement. Tom Happ, creator of Axiom Verge, took to the screen to announce he had been working on a sequel title, Axiom Verge 2, for the last four years. A short trailer followed:
You may think you already know the world of Axiom Verge. Think again.

If the tweet is indicative of anything, the story may be set in the past. “Discover the origins” may imply a prequel setting, elaborating on the events that lead up to the original game. It would be an interesting turn for the series, which was shrouded immensely in mystery and vagueness. Axiom Verge 2 may end up filling in the gaps left from the original’s plot.
As shown at the very end of the trailer, Axiom Verge 2 is set to release Fall of 2020, roughly a year away.
The original game was released in 2015 to near-universal acclaim, and received further accolades in having been developed entirely by one person. It can be purchased on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It even received physical copies in 2017. With all the prior success, the promised sequel has much to live up to, and it seems to balance out the old and new quite nicely.
