The re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar has once again shown the film to be a juggernaut at the global box office.
This remaster has taken in a sizeable sum in both international and US territories. The first being $20.5m and the other $10m. Making the re-release have a total performance of $30.5m at the box office. This news only adds to the credence of how unstoppable Avatar is for moviegoers. The film still stands tall as the highest-grossing film of all time.
The film has beat out other new releases at the global box office such as Oliva Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling (grossing $30m). This suggests, while new content is always welcomed, audiences may be in a position of wanting to seek comfort in more familiar media.
It has been 13 years since the original release of Avatar. Yet, the public still hold an affinity for the moon of Pandora and the Na’vi. It also helps that the re-release of Avatar is remastered in 4K HDR. This updated element will be a great asset in getting fans in seats. It also stands as an opportunity to draw in new audiences before the release of the next instalment.
Avatar: The Way of the Water is due to be released on December 16, 2022 and the success at the box office that the Avatar re-release is having shows promise. One has to wonder whether the sequel will surpass the original as the highest-grossing film of all time. It is possible as audiences join in on the hype the studio has created for the film.
Until the film is released, we will continue to marvel at the visuals of the original.
