Arcade Racing Games of 2020 Hits Record Low Sales Figures

Turns out 2020 has not been the year for arcade racers. Plenty of experienced racing game developers haven't delivered any success this year and the sales figures tells enough how bad it's been. Despite the developers trying, it doesn't seem to satisfy the fans.

Racing Games of 2020 Hits Record Low Sales FiguresAlmost a dozen of racing games have been released this year, both simulators and arcades. Despite the simulators having a fantastic year, the arcades are having a rough time getting those sales figures up. Although the developers of the arcade racing games are very experienced, fans have not been satisfied at all. This result into a considerable loss in sales. Not only does it affect the revenue, critics will affect a game’s reputation through reviews. This year has been surprisingly negative in terms of receptions among most arcade racing games.

With all the new games that came out this year, Forza Horizon 4 is still topping the list of the best selling racing games. It’s over 2 years old now! Meanwhile, the other racing games that came out this year are not visible anywhere on the charts. Only in 2020, Forza Horizon 4 gained about 6 million new players and hit the top list among the most played games on Xbox One/PC. None of the arcades are visible on the charts, meaning they haven’t sold much. But also, the critics and reviews estimates how many copies a game could sell. Obviously, a game with mostly negative reviews won’t sell that well.

The Project CARS titles are vastly known for being simulators, but the third title turned out to be way different than fans expected. The franchise turned into an arcade racer which wasn’t very appreciated by the community. Considering its fan base is mostly sim-racers, this would eventually lead to a huge loss in sales. Looking at the statistics, the third title sold 86% less copies than the previous title.

Fast and Furious: Crossroads has been described as a “disappointing” game according to reviewers, with a Metacritic score of 35. The Steam chart of current active players shows that the game only has two active players. It clearly indicates that this game never became a success for Slightly Mad Studios, who also developed Project CARS 3. Unfortunately, none of their games made a success on the market this year. Project CARS 3 and Fast and Furious: Crossroads sold about the same number of copies the first week. However, Project CARS 3 may be performing slightly better since it receives DLC packs and potential physics improvement could happen in the future.

Next year might not even bring much at all to us racing fans as we’re not expecting any racing game to come out. Perhaps there will be a Gran Turismo 7 coming soon, however, it’s not an arcade racer. We do not have any information on the next Forza, which leaves us clueless on when to expect a new arcade racer.
