It has been announced that Amy Hennig will head up production on a brand new Star Wars game for Skydance New Media.
Skydance New Media is the video game division of the Skydance Media movie production studio. The gaming sector of the company was founded November of 2019 with Amy Hennig leading the team. The young video game studio will join forces with Lucasfilm Games to produce an action-adventure title which will feature an original story set in the Star Wars universe.
When Skydance New Media was founded in 2019, its goal was to develop high-quality interactive experiences playable on both traditional gaming platforms and evolving video game streaming services. In the 3 years since its conception, SNM has managed to assemble a varied line-up of talented developers with years of AAA experience under their belt.
Amy Hennig is the award-winning creator responsible for co-creating the Uncharted series, writing and directing the first three games in the series when she worked for Naughty Dog. After leaving the Sony first-party studio, she went to Visceral Games, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts.
For the EA owned studio, she began work on what was an extremely promising looking title called Star Wars: 1313. As incredible as that game looked, it was subsequently cancelled and Visceral Games was dissolved by EA. It was after this that Hennig was named president of Skydance New Media.
In a statement put out in conjunction with this news, Amy spoke about how Star Wars has had a big hand in shaping her creative decisions over the years:
I’ve often described how seeing Star Wars in 1977 essentially rewired my 12-year-old brain, shaping my creative life and future indelibly. I’m elated to be working with Lucasfilm Games again to tell interactive stories in this galaxy that I love.
Amy Hennig has well and truly proved herself as a visionary of the action-adventure genre and the news that she is returning to helm a Star Wars project has been exciting for Star Wars fans around the globe.
Douglas Reilly, VP at Lucasfilm Games, also put out a statement which echoed Hennig’s excitement.
We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working again with Amy. She and the Skydance New Media team have the talent and ambition to create a unique Star Wars adventure. Their vision for making inviting, cinematic interactive entertainment makes this collaboration very exciting. We’re working hard with their team of experienced and talented developers, and we’re looking forward to sharing more with Star Wars fans when the time is right.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this news is that it is yet another example of a company outside of EA taking on development of a game set in the Star Wars universe. This latest reveal just goes further to prove that Disney’s and Lucasfilm are scattering their bets on games outside of those developed by EA.
Julien Beak, Amy Hennig’s long-time creative collaborator and VP of Skydance New Media also made a statement regarding the studio partnering with Lucasfilm Games:
We couldn’t be happier to be working with Lucasfilm Games. We look forward to taking fans on an epic journey with this Star Wars action-adventure title.
This Star Wars game from SNM will join the plethora of previously announced Star Wars video games from major game studios such as; Ubisoft, Respawn, and Quantic Dream.
As well as this exciting Star Wars game, Hennig’s team are additionally developing a game in association with Marvel. There has not yet been a great deal of information revealed with regards to the Marvel project. All that has been revealed so far is the news that Skydance New Media has teamed up with Marvel Entertainment to create a brand new game with an original plot, featuring a unique look at some well-known Marvel characters.
