The First Descendant Season 3 Episode 4 Update – Everything Coming May 21

May 21’s Season 3 Episode 4 update brings Ultimate Esiemo, Onslaught Mode’s full launch, Valby’s rework, and major farming changes players will want to prioritize first.

The First Descendant Season 3 Episode 4 Update – Everything Coming May 21

The First Descendant Season 3 Episode 4 arrives on May 21, 2026, bringing one of the biggest updates the game has seen in months.

The developer livestream promises a packed content drop that includes a brand-new Ultimate Descendant, the full release of Onslaught Mode, and a complete overhaul of the Farming Loop.

Players can also expect two new Ultimate Weapons, new content modes, balance changes for Valby, and a wave of seasonal skins and events.

1. Season 3 Episode 4 Roadmap

The confirmed content rollout schedule runs from May 21 through July

The Season 3 Episode 4 roadmap reveals a month-by-month content schedule running through July.

The May 21 update is only the opening salvo, with meaningful additions planned to expand on the systems launching this month.

  • May 21: Ultimate Esiemo, Onslaught Mode official release, Farming Loop overhaul.
  • June: Onslaught Mode Expansion #1, Bunny balance update, and a new collaboration.
  • July: Void Intercept Extreme Difficulty beta, Onslaught Mode Expansion #2, and two new Serena skill modules.

Players who have been waiting for the full Onslaught experience since the April beta should note that June and July will continue expanding the mode well beyond what launches on May 21.

2. Ultimate Esiemo

Ultimate Esiemo arrives alongside kit improvements for the base Descendant

The headline new Descendant for Episode 4 is Ultimate Esiemo, and his arrival comes alongside meaningful improvements to the base Esiemo kit.

His Ultimate equipment is an Arche-transition explosion-proof suit called the Black Detonator. Chemical particles are stored in Neural Detonator Units, which are quickly ejected from beneath the exoskeleton, greatly accelerating the explosion response.

Base Esiemo’s skills have also been improved alongside the Ultimate release:

  • Synchronization Value: Increased to 1.643.
  • Skill Activation: Overall skill activation times have been significantly reduced.
  • Time Bombs: Stacked Time Bombs can now be deployed all at once, significantly increasing overall damage output.

Players can earn Ultimate Esiemo’s crafting materials as rewards by playing the new Esiemo story content.

New Skill Modules for Ultimate Esiemo

Two new transcendent modules arrive with Ultimate Esiemo, each pushing a distinct playstyle:

  • Rampaging Mad Bomber: Built around melee weapon synergy. Hitting enemies with a melee weapon attaches sticky bombs. Players can use Skill 3 to taunt enemies, recover shields, attack with melee, and detonate the bombs as a combat rotation.
  • Explosion Maestro: A critical hit build module suited for Void Intercept. It doubles the number of attached bombs when attacking with Arche Explosion. Detonating stacked bombs triggers a special explosion that causes massive damage. Skill 4 can stack up to 50 sticky bombs.

3. Onslaught Mode Official Launch

Onslaught Mode officially launches following the April beta period

The Onslaught Mode beta ran in April 2026, and the full version officially launches on May 21 with changes based on player feedback.

Further updates for Onslaught Mode are already planned for June and July.

Key Changes in the Official Release

The official launch brings a major set of structural improvements compared to the beta:

  • Entry Sequence: Players can now see party members before the mission begins.
  • Commander Monsters: Three new commanders have been added.
  • Final Battle: Takes place on the third map with a Colossus appearing.
  • Barricades: Gain a taunt function and a knockback effect on installation.
  • Artillery Support: Players can spend resources to call in artillery support.
  • Pickup Weapons: Special weapons that deal greater damage to Tyrant monsters are available when surprise missions are completed.
  • Ability Tier System: 25 abilities have been added, with a tier system introduced. Higher-tier abilities provide more powerful bonus effects.
  • MP Recovery: Adjusted to be faster throughout the entire mode.

Onslaught Mode Rewards

Players can farm guaranteed Ultimate-tier Ancestor Modules through weekly challenges

Compared with the beta, the official reward structure adds guaranteed weekly Ancestor Modules, better difficulty-based module tiers, and extra rewards through Weekly Challenge Missions.

  • Players can earn up to 4 Ancestor Modules with guaranteed options per week.
  • Greater difficulties guarantee higher-tier Ancestor Modules (clearing Difficulty 3 guarantees two Ultimate-tier modules).
  • A Weekly Challenge Mission system has been introduced, granting additional rewards upon completion.

4. Ultimate Weapons: Frenzied Locomotive and Whirlwind

Two new Ultimate Weapons arrive with the May 21 update, each featuring a distinct combat identity designed to suit entirely different Descendant builds and tactical playstyles.

Before farming either weapon, compare its weapon type and effect against your current reactor setup so you do not spend resources on a weapon your build is unlikely to support.

Frenzied Locomotive

The Frenzied Locomotive is the Season 3 Episode 4 Battle Pass Ultimate Weapon.

  • Type: Heavy machine gun with a rotating barrel.
  • Ammo: No ammo limit. Operates through an overheat gauge management system instead.
  • Bonus Damage: Firing from the ground applies a damage bonus.
  • Synergy: Pairs with Compressed Round Enzo.

Whirlwind

Whirlwind is a new tactical rifle specialized in AoE damage.

  • Type: Tactical rifle.
  • On Fire: Creates a turbulence that increases jump height and slows enemy movement.
  • Continued Fire: Transforms the turbulence into a Gust that deals AoE damage.
  • Max Gusts: Up to 3 Gusts can be active simultaneously.

5. Season 3 Episode 4 Battle Pass Rewards

The Season 3 Episode 4 Battle Pass launches alongside the May 21 update. Purchasing and leveling up the premium track of the battle pass grants access to exclusive cosmetics and the season’s signature heavy weapon:

  • Ultimate Weapon: Frenzied Locomotive.
  • Skins: “Back Alleys of Albion” includes both male and female common skins.
  • Cosmetics: New social motions and spawn motions.

6. Axium Mining and Bounty Operations

Match the required attributes daily to participate in Bounty Operations

During the May 21 livestream, the developers also introduced two new progression systems.

Axium Mining adds random Axion field encounters for Axium and hoverbike enhancement materials, while Bounty Operations rotate commander targets for rewards like Trigger Module selection boxes, Cooling Units, and Ancestor Modules.

Axium Mining

Players engage Vulgus forces to secure Axium in this game mode, supplementing hoverbike enhancement material farming. The randomized nature of its appearances means players will encounter it organically as they move through the Axion field rather than queuing for it directly.

Bounty Operations

Bounty Operations is a daily rotation content mode in which players track and eliminate different commanders based on the day of the week.

  • Monday to Friday: Only Descendants matching the day’s corresponding attribute can deploy.
  • Saturday and Sunday: All commanders are activated simultaneously, allowing any Descendant to participate.
  • Vulgus Bio Data Chip: Using this item grants premium rewards, including Trigger Module selection boxes, Cooling Units, and Ancestor Modules matching the operation’s attribute.

7. Void Abyss Intercept: Defiler Returns

The Defiler returns to The First Descendant as a Colossus in the Void Abyss Intercept. Its specifications have been adjusted to match current game standards. The Defiler skin “The Defiled” can be obtained directly through this returning content.

Defiler skins for Descendants who were not yet released during the original Void Abyss Intercept can also be obtained, giving newer players access to cosmetics they previously missed.

8. Balance Changes

The May 21 update includes a major monthly Descendant balance pass specifically targeting Valby, alongside targeted weapon adjustments for both Enduring Legacy and Voltia. These changes aim to clarify each asset’s combat role and improve its viability in the new Onslaught Mode.

Valby Rework

Valby’s rework unifies her Arche type with Fusion and boosts performance in the Liquefied state

Along with the update, Valby will also receive a rework. Her Arche type is now exclusively unified to Fusion.

She also gains a passive that increases movement speed on water and adds damage when combined with Laundry, pushing the rework toward water/Laundry setups and the firearm critical-hit options listed below.

Skills 1 and 2 can now be chained while in the Liquefied state, which was not previously possible. Her specific skill-level changes are as follows:

  • Passive: Increased movement speed on water; additional damage effects linked to Laundry.
  • Bubble Bullet: Improved to automatically track enemies and bounce between them, dealing damage.
  • Plop Plop: Creates a puddle that pulls and knocks down enemies.
  • Clean Up: Valby’s performance increases while in the Liquefied state.

Three of her existing Skill Modules are also being reworked.

  • Spiral Tidal Wave: Changed into a module for skill critical hit builds.
  • Singing Water: Skill 4 modified to focus damage on powerful enemies, creates a water puddle, accumulates Laundry-marked targets, and fires a water cannon.
  • Supply Moisture: Improved for critical hit firearm DPS play. Attacking Laundry targets with a firearm triggers ammo recovery and increases the firearm’s critical hit multiplier. Skill 3 applies a Laundry effect when attacking with a firearm and provides an instant reload.

Weapon Balance: Enduring Legacy and Voltia

Both Enduring Legacy and Voltia receive targeted adjustments to clarify their combat roles

Two Ultimate Weapons will also receive targeted adjustments rather than full overhauls to clarify their specific roles.

  • Enduring Legacy: The firearm mechanic has been changed. Firing rate decreases the more you shoot, but firearm damage increases. Explosive incendiary rounds are also fired, reducing enemy fire resistance and increasing fire-attribute damage.
  • Voltia: Retains its existing functionality with minor improvements. When multi-hits occur, the damage of the next chain current increases, maximizing effectiveness against clustered monsters.

9. New Modules

Plasma Condensation aims to fill Ines’s single-target damage gaps

Three new Trigger Modules and three new Skill Modules for Ines are being added, each targeting a specific Descendant or filling a known gap in existing kits.

New Trigger Modules

These new modules focus heavily on synergizing with specific elemental effects and status conversions to maximize damage output across different content.

  • Explosive Aesthetics: Built for Esiemo. After placing 10 explosive projectiles, players gain the Finale effect, which triggers a larger chain explosion when using Skill 4, Arche Detonation.
  • Infiltration Mechanism: Designed for Valby. After using a status conversion skill like Liquefied, using Skills 1 or 2 deals additional damage to enemies matching the equipped Reactor’s attribute.
  • Current Bonding: Addresses Ines’s lack of single-target damage. After binding a Colossus, commander, or Tyrant with Skills 2 and 3, using Skill 1 deals greater damage.

Ines Skill Modules

Plasma Bullet converts MP into AoE lightning attacks while firing weapons

All new Ines skill modules can be farmed directly from the Void Vessel:

  • Plasma Ball (Improved): Continuously emits lightning around Ines. Skill 3 has been modified to move to a designated location and knock down enemies for close-range combat.
  • Plasma Condensation: Conductors stack up and transform into powerful single-target damage. Skill 2 Charge Concentration can now be charged for higher efficiency in smaller-scale battles.
  • Plasma Bullet: A firearm-focused build module. Multi-hit chance increases proportionally to MP, and Skill 1 Induced Current becomes a toggle skill that performs AoE attacks while firing.

10. Farming Loop Overhaul

The QoL changes simplify material collection and streamline progression on Hard difficulty

The Farming Loop overhaul targets Hard difficulty progression by consolidating key Descendant and weapon farming around Archive Shards.

Players can now collect essential Descendants and weapons by farming a single material called Archive Shards immediately after entering Hard difficulty, with the collection speed scaling as the player progresses.

  • Archive Shards: A new consolidated research material obtainable from various Hard difficulty content, starting at 400%.
  • Amorphous Material Consolidation: Materials are now categorized by Descendant rather than by number. Players acquire blueprints by playing content where the target Descendant’s Amorphous Material drops.
  • Transcendent Module Farming: Transcendent modules can now be farmed in the same content where the Descendant’s Amorphous Materials drop.
  • Reactor Smart Drop: In 400% dungeons, only Reactors matching the currently played Descendant’s attribute and Arche type will drop.

Archive Shards can streamline the process of unlocking Descendants

  • Forced Stabilization: A gauge accumulates as stabilization progresses. Upon reaching 100%, players can select one of the Amorphous Material rewards to open. Materials can also be opened directly from the consumables menu.
  • Recommended Descendants: The game will guide players on which Descendant to farm for each activity.
  • Regional Material Consolidation: Two to three types of basic research materials scattered across regions are being consolidated into one type.
  • Difficulty Reduction: The difficulty of Void Vessel and 400% content has been lowered to help newly entered Descendants settle in.
  • Starter Descendants: Upon completing the prologue, players will now start with Lepic, Viessa, and Ajax all unlocked.

11. Arche Activity and Hoverbike Mod Frames

Two entirely new game systems are launching with the May 21 update, Arche Activity and Hoverbike Mod Frames, adding significant progression depth for both end-game Void Intercept players and those currently working on upgrading their hoverbike.

Arche Activity

Maintain a sufficient Arche Activity score to access difficult end-game content

The Arche Activity is a new scoring system that evaluates Descendants across several progression factors: Level, Arche Tuning, Equipped items, and Modules.

The score is applied as a minimum entry requirement for Onslaught Mode difficulties and Bounty Operations. Players who have not invested in their Descendant’s progression will need to meet the required threshold before accessing harder tiers.

Hoverbike Mod Frames

The hoverbike’s level cap has been expanded to level 20, with Mod Frames unlocked upon reaching that cap.

Players can freely configure various functions across 4 slots, including double jump, short boost on jump landing, drift, and evasive maneuvers.

12. QoL Improvements

The May 21 QoL changes focus on build management, preset swapping, clearer recommendation menus, and research/event alerts, which should help players who frequently adjust setups between operations.

  • Save Build Feature: Save other players’ modules, weapons, and Arche Tuning, then load them anytime to reference against your own setups.
  • Preset Swaps: Descendant or preset swaps are now possible during the mission countdown after a Public Mission or Operation has started.
  • Recommended Mutant Cells: The menu now displays only recommended Mutant Cells with active effects for the current Descendant.
  • Info Screen Navigation: On PC, the key to access the info screen has been reverted to the F1 release input. Consoles continue to use the hold button.
  • Research Acceleration Alert: During events, the result screen notifies players of research about to be completed and how many more times the content must be played.
  • DLSS 4.5 Support: The 2nd Gen Transformer model has been added.

13. May 21 Skins and Events

The May 21 update adds the Goddesses of Albion set, Nell’s Abyss Tracking Suit, an Ultimate Esiemo premium skin, and two-tone hair dye, with the Strider Mobile Combat Suit following on June 4.
