How to Get Summoning Bell to call in Spirits in Elden Ring?

To summon a Spirit in Elden Ring, you must first acquire the Spirit Calling Bell. This will stay in the Key Items inventory tab, and doesn’t need to be equipped in order to call on your combat companion of choice.

You can find this summoning bell by following one of these methods:

  • Resting at the Church of Elleh Site of Grace after obtaining your spectral steed, Torrent
  • Purchasing it from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold

To get Torrent, activate the Church of Elleh Site of Grace. It is located just north of the Stranded Graveyard you first entered the open world from. Either find another Site of Grace, or die and respawn at the church to trigger a conversation with Melina. You will get Torrent when you agree to her offer, and can now ride on horseback when it is summoned.

After obtaining Torrent, you must either rest, or die and respawn, during the night at the Church of Elleh Site of Grace. An NPC called Renna will appear and ask if you can summon a spectral steed. Tell her yes to get the Spirit Calling Bell and the Lone Wolf Ashes Spirit.

If Renna doesn’t appear for you, you can buy the summoning bell for 100 Runes from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold instead. The Lone Wolf Ashes Spirit can also be purchased from them for 500 Runes. This location is unlocked by speaking with Melina after resting at a Site of Grace outside of the Limgrave area, or by defeating the first boss, Margit the Fell Omen, at Stormveil Castle.

How to Summon Spirits in Elden Ring?

Now that you have the spirit summoning bell, it’s finally time to learn how to summon Spirits in Elden Ring! To call in a spirit, you will need to equip its Ashes to either your Pouch or Equipment from the menu. Be careful when doing this, as the game does not pause, so enemies can still attack you.

Either equip Spirit Ashes from Equipment or the Pouch.

Either equip Spirit Ashes from Equipment or the Pouch.

To use the Spirit Ashes in the same way you use HP and FP flasks, bring up the menu and select “Equipment”. Navigate to the bottom and select the slot you wish to assign a Spirit’s Ashes to. You can now quickly change to the summon Spirit and press the “Use Item” button to call on it. This is the X button for Xbox players, Square on PlayStation, and R by default on PC.

Alternatively, you can summon a Spirit in Elden Ring by assigning each one to a button in the Pouch. The Pouch is found on the top right-hand side of the menu. Its contents can be changed by pressing the “Switch” button, and then choosing a Spirit Ash to assign to a direction on the d-pad. It can then be summoned by holding down Y on Xbox, or Triangle on PlayStation, then pressing the corresponding d-pad input. PC players should hold down E and press a directional arrow instead to access the contents of their Pouch.

When Can You Summon Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring?

Each Spirit costs a different amount of Focus Points (FP), so if the blue bar is depleted, you can no longer summon spirit Ashes. Be sure to level up the Mind attribute, or up the number of FP flasks held at a Site of Grace, if you plan on using Spirit Ashes a lot.

Just remember you can only summon Spirits in Elden Ring once per life. This means only one Spirit Ash can be used once while battling bosses and other tough enemies. There are also certain areas away from Rebirth Monuments that Spirits can’t be summoned in. You will know you are in an area safe to summon a Spirit if the bottom left-hand side of your HUD shows a glowing white icon resembling a gravestone. It is located just above the writing of your equipped War of Ashes skill, or parry ability if a shield is equipped.
