BioShock Infinite Side-Quests Guide: Every Vox Code and Hidden Chest

Bioshock Infinite is full of hidden secrets and easter eggs galore. Here's a Bioshock Infinite side-quests guide to help you find them. One of the trickier things to complete are the side-quests scattered throughout the game in the form of hidden chests and Vox Populi secret rooms containing upgrades and goodies.

Bioshock Infinite Side-Quests Guide: Every Vox Code And Hidden Chest

BioShock Infinite is a deep and engrossing first-person shooter chock full of secrets and hidden upgrades. More often than not, these vital upgrades are in locked chests or stashed away by the Vox Populi. To find them, you’ll need to find a set of keys or code book in one area, and bring it to the locked chest or code in another. Finding them can be tricky, especially in a game this chaotic and branching. In this Bioshock Infinite side-quests guide, I’m going to help you find the keys/code books, and tell you where you need to use them. I’ll tell you which chapter you can find them, as well as what the chests or secret rooms contain. There are six side-quests in all, so on with the guide!

1. Comstock Center Rooftops

The first side-quest has you unlocking a chest not too far into the game.

The first side-quest has you unlocking a chest not too far into the game.

Contents:

  • Health Kit
  • Salts Vial
  • Infusion Upgrade

The first side-quest is a fairly simple one compared to the others in the game. After you’ve survived your encounter on some rooftops with a dozen guards and two automated turrets, you’ll need to jump to a nearby skyhook to progress. Jump onto the skyhook and turn completely around. Leap into the building from the balcony in front of you, enter the door on the left and head down the stairs. Ignoring the staircase to your right, head into the bedroom a little further down the corridor. Inside there is a locked chest which will need a key that is found further in the level. Be sure to remember the location of this chest as you’ll need to backtrack to it once you’ve found the key.

For the key itself, carry on in the chapter until you get to a spooky looking courthouse with crows outside. Head inside and go up the grand staircase behind the statue of John Wilkes Booth. This will lead you to a room full of worshippers that you’ll need to clear out before going any further. When the enemies are dealt with, look for a brightly lit altar with an infusion upgrade and book on it. Alongside these items is the key you need to unlock the chest you found earlier. Now simply backtrack to the chest, unlock your reward, and finish the side-quest.

2. Soldier’s Field

This side-quest has you deciphering a Vox Populi code for the first time.

Contents:

  • Voxophone
  • RPG
  • 1 Lockpick
  • Money
  • Health Kit
  • Salts Vial
  • Infusion Upgrade

Your next side-quest is further into the game and has you deciphering a Vox Populi code. After Elizabeth shows you her tear abilities in the elevator, head through the museum-like building. You should then come to a plaza full of enemies with buildings on either side. Clear out all of the enemies and head into the building on the left. Walk down the short corridor in the far-right corner of the building and head into the first bathroom on your left. On the wall is the code you’ll need to decipher along with a dead body with a clue as to the location of the code book.

For the next part of the side-quest, you’ll have to exit the building you’re currently in and head into the one directly opposite the plaza. Walk into the building and you should see a fairly obvious cannon in the middle of the room. A close examination of the cannon will reveal the code book you need wedged in the barrel. The book is very noticeable even with just a passing glance at the cannon. Head back to the code on the wall and let Elizabeth decipher it for you. After she’s done, go into the bathroom directly adjacent to the one your standing in and interact with the hat on the hatstand. Go through the newly opened passage, enjoy your goodies and tick off this side-quest.

3. The Plaza of Zeal

Another code for us to decipher.

Another code for us to decipher.

Contents:

  • Voxophone
  • Volley Gun
  • 3 Lockpicks
  • Infusion Upgrade

Your next side-quest starts much later in the game and has you deciphering another Vox Populi code. After your first conversation with Fink in the elevator, head through the giant double doors. Take a sharp right, head down the stairs and then another right. If you followed the guide correctly, you should now be standing in a dock-like area with a set of locked double doors to your left. Have Elizabeth unlock the doors for you and head to the back of the room to find the code on the wall. If you’re in need of a lockpick, fret not, as there is one on the top floor of Chen Lin’s gunshop. Remember the location of this code as you’ll have to collect the code book later in the chapter.

For now, ignore the side-quest and carry on with the game as you usually would. Make your way through the Good Time Club until Elizabeth tells you that Chen Lin is in cell number nine. Have Elizabeth open the nearby locked door and defeat the enemies inside. Once dealt with, you should be able to find a code book on a barrel next to an open furnace. You can now either backtrack all the way to the code, or carry on with the main story as your natural progression in the game will bring you back to the Plaza of Zeal. When you’re back at the code, let Elizabeth decipher it for you and interact with the massive golden clock next to it to claim your prizes.

4. Shantytown

Another set of keys for another locked chest.

Another set of keys for another locked chest.

Contents:

  • Infusion Upgrade
  • Voxophone (Next to the chest)

For this side-quest you’ll need to collect the keys for a future locked chest as you can’t return for the keys once you finish the chapter. The keys you’ll need are located in Shantytown in the basement of a bar called The Graveyard Shift. After your long descent in an elevator where Elizabeth calls herself a freak, exit the elevator and head straight forward. The sign for the bar is massive, so you should see it as soon as you enter Shantytown. Walk into the bar and go down the stairs in the far-right corner to enter the basement. The moment you hit the bottom of the stairs, turn sharp left and you should see the keys on top of a barrel next to an overturned crate.

These keys will open a chest located not too far away, so carry on with the story and leave Shantytown. You should now be in a building called the Bull Yard Impound, in which the chest is located. Head through the building, walk through the giant double doors, and prepare for a lengthy fight. After defeating all the enemies, go up the stairs to the left of the entrance, ignoring the first door on the left. Keep following the walkway and enter the room that has a giant chalkboard in it labelled “The Vox Threat”. In the far-left corner of the room, you’ll find your chest with an infusion upgrade nestled inside. Just two more side-quests to go!

5. Port Prosperity

This side-quest is the only one that doesn't require a set of keys or a code book.

This side-quest is the only one that doesn’t require a set of keys or a code book.

Contents:

  • Money
  • Voxophone
  • Infusion Upgrade
  • 2 Lockpicks
  • Return to Sender Vigor

This side-quest is unique as it requires you to find a voxophone instead of keys or a code book. You’ll also need to make sure you have at least four lockpicks, otherwise this side-quest will be impossible to complete. If your short of lockpicks, there are multiple firemen which drop one lockpick each when defeated. For now, carry on with the main story until you reach a bar called The Salty Oyster. This bar is a short walk after you and Elizabeth talk about giant balloons and the Lutece twins during a cable-car ride. Once you’ve found the bar, unlock the door and defeat the enemies inside. The voxophone we need to uncover the secret room is a little further into the chapter.

Carry on through the story until you hit a set of turnstiles; Elizabeth will mention they’re one-way. Instead, go down the nearby alley and unlock the door to Founder’s bookstore. Head down the stairs at the back of store, keeping in mind that a few enemies will follow you once you get to the bottom. At the bottom of the stairs, turn right and grab the Voxophone on the small table next to a yellow sofa. Now backtrack all the way to The Salty Oyster and push the button underneath the register to reveal a secret room on your left. This side-quest is often overlooked as the button is only visible until the player picks up the Voxophone at the end of the chapter.

6. Downtown Emporia

This final side-quest is the longest by far.

This final side-quest is the longest by far.

Contents:

  • Infusion Upgrade
  • Voxophone
  • 3 Lockpicks
  • Loads of money
  • Burstgun

The final side-quest is the most rewarding in the game, but also happens to be the most complex. Downtown Emporia is not only a difficult area, but is also the only non-linear area in the entire game. It’s very easy to get yourself lost here, but follow this guide and you should be fine. We’ll start off by taking the elevator right after your brief encounter with Songbird. After the elevator breaks and you’ve defeated the Handyman and his chums, unlock the large gate labelled Market District. Head into the burning building in front of you, drop down into the basement and look for a well-lit room containing a large white sink. The code book we need is on the shelves on the left.

Now carry on with the main story until you fight Lady Comstock for the first time. After a short chat with the Lutece twins, backtrack to area where you initially fought the Handyman. You should see a set of stairs with a corpse on them, leading up to a set of double doors. Unlock these doors, but also be careful of the powerful enemies that surprise you before your able to. Once these enemies are dead, head into the building and down the elevator into The Bank of the Prophet. Exit the elevator and clear the bank of any lingering enemies. Go through the door to the left of the giant vault at the back of the room and walk down the corridor, ignoring the double doors in front of you.

Carry on down the corridor and you should see a room with the word “Hoarder” written in red on the wall. Look behind the desk and let Elizabeth decipher the code on the clipboard. Simply interact with the typewriter next to the code, look to your right and enjoy your rewards.

If you’ve followed this guide from the beginning of the game to the end, then that’s every side-quest in the game done and dusted. These side-quests are only short detours, but house some of the more important items in the game, especially if you’re going for the platinum trophy or 100% completion. I hope I’ve helped you get the most out of BioShock Infinite because it’s a terrific game. Hopefully the rumoured sequel will be just as good, if not better.
