7 Tips on Being a Shapeshifter in Streets of Rogue

The Shapeshifter is a diminutive, naked humanoid with eerie red eyes. It can move very quickly, but their small size means they take more damage and deal less damage. Which is why you get the ability to take over other people and play as them! Successfully playing as the Shapeshifter requires quick feet and the ability to adapt to different play styles.

1. Know what the characters can do

Streets of Rogue (PC). Why do they call them Shapeshifters when they possess people?
As a Shapeshifter, your abilities are defined by what people you can reach. Of course, it’s important to know just what the people available to you can do. Having knowledge of what each character type can do makes it much easier to formulate plans for completing your missions. As a rule of thumb, the character classes you can normally choose to play as, like Gangsters and Gorillas, tend to be better than the NPC only classes, such as Office Workers and Drug Dealers.

2. Watch out for law enforcement

Streets of Rogue (PC). Sadly, none of the police are free spirits.
The police have some very strict laws against indecent exposure. If they see you running around undisguised and naked, they’ll instantly turn hostile and try to kill you. It’s a good idea to try and thin them out while possessing someone. That way, you can ditch that disguise when the heat gets too much and swap to someone else who hasn’t upset the law. If you can possess a Doctor, you can use their instant knockout ability to quietly take out Cops and Supercops.

3. Explore the Plumbing System

Being Diminutive is pretty bad, but it has its advantages. When in your natural form, you get the special ability to flush yourself down toilets, which warps you to another random toilet. Generally, this is just a less reliable way of warping around the map. Sometimes, however, this can get you into places that can normally be hard to access. It’s also useful during Disasters, as the normal warp system is disabled during Disasters.

4. Be a modern Warfarer

Streets of Rogue (PC). If you upgrade it at an Augmentation Booth, you more or less have full regeneration when possessing someone.
When it comes to traits as a Shapeshifter, the ones you choose will probably depend on your play style and the kinds of characters you like to possess. One trait that’s generally useful for Shapeshifters, though, is ‘Modern Warfarer,’ which slowly heals health when you’re below 20. When possessing someone, you use their health bar, which is much lower than the player character’s health bar normally is. Because of this, the regeneration will kick in with a higher percentage of health left than it would on other characters.

5. Take advantage of NPC loyalties

Streets of Rogue (PC). "Hey, boss. You don't mind me going into the vault for a minute, do you?"One of the obvious advantages of possessing someone is that people will treat you as if you’re that person. Possess a Blahd gangster, and other Blahds will come to your defense if you get into a fight. Possess a Goon in a warehouse, and you can walk by the others unimpeded as long as you don’t try to steal from the safe/chest. Of course, this goes the other way around. Walking around as a Blahd can be dangerous if you cross paths with a Crepe, who will gladly fight against their gang rivals.

6. know how to safely dispose of disguises

Streets of Rogue (PC). Just one little push, and their goose is cooked.
There are times when you’ve possessed someone you’d rather not walking around when you’re done with them. It’s a good idea to know how to quickly kill them when de-possessing them. When you de-possess someone, they’ll be Hostile toward you, but also afflicted with Dizziness. Dizziness makes characters slowly wander around and unable to do anything until it wears off or they take damage. A good way to dispose of de-possessed people is to put them in the path of a hazard. Good places to ditch them include:

  • On a conveyor belt leading to a bottomless pit.
  • In front of a flame trap or crusher before it activates.
  • On some minecart or subway tracks.

7. Know when and where to run

Streets of Rogue (PC). Note the health bar. 33 health as a Cop.
It’s pretty much inevitable that one of your disguises will die, since NPCs have around 30 max health. When this happens, make sure you have a place to run, since whatever killed you will most likely be still around. Hiding in shops or bars is generally a no-go, since Bartenders, Clerks, and Shopkeepers dislike you being naked and demand you leave if they see you. If you haven’t managed to clear out an area to hide, your best bet is to break line of sight and possess someone to throw your foes off your trail.
