There is a brand new set of Pokémon cards making its way out of Japan next week. On November 13th, we will see the official release of Vivid Voltage, a combination of the Japanese releases Legendary Heartbeat and Amazing Volt Tackle. Featuring our favorite chunky Pikachu front and center, there are some absolutely gorgeous pieces to look out for.
Here are the cards that you should be most excited about if they fall out of your booster packs. As we’ve discussed previously, the Vivid Voltage set has booster packs, theme decks, and a battle box to help you get the most bang for your buck. It will be on sale on November 13th, 2020 at participating retailers.
5. CHARIZARD (VIVID VOLTAGE PROMO)
This specific Charizard has been seen popping up in Build and Battle Kits during the prerelease phase of launch. Some card shops and smaller retailers have been receiving early shipments and, for the good of the people, have been streaming some unboxings. Aside from the apparently low availability, this is also a really solid card. The Battle Sense ability will give you an edge at planning your next steps, and Royal Blaze does a decent amount of base damage for a pretty small amount of Energy.
4. ZARUDE V (FULL-ART VARIANT)
Premiering for the first time in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, it seemed like Zarude had two options when it came to how it was going to be portrayed. It could have either been the mascot of the whole expansion, or it could have been a super rare one-off that we heard about in whispers. Thankfully, The Pokémon Company has split the difference and offered two variants of Zarude for players to collect.
This full art variant, frankly, looks much better than the standard card. There are no technical differences, the only change is the artwork. But come on, tell me that doesn’t look great. Historically, full-art cards are valued higher as well, so keep that in mind if you’re deciding which one to keep in your deck and which to put on your shelf.
3. THE AMAZING POKÉMON
Yes, this is sort of cheating, but the new Amazing Pokémon variants are just too good to ignore. With a rainbow art splash that positions these between standard and full-art presentations, these feature select Mythical and Legendary Pokémon. Celebi, Jirachi, Raikou, Rayquaza, Zatian, and Zamazeta are the first Amazing Pokémon to be released, and I’m sure that we’ll be seeing even more of them coming in future expansions.
2. GALARIAN OBSTAGOON
Look at this. It looks like an extra on Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. It looks like it just scored a sweet deal on some discontinued leg warmers. But aside from those redeeming qualities, just look at the thing. Holographic gold, Galarian, and with some really effective abilities, Galarian Obstagoon is a great card. Untamed Shout deals damage to one of your opponents Pokémon (including Benched!), and Obstruct makes up for a (somewhat) subdued attack power with a defensive followup. If you can play this card right, it’ll be a game-changer.
1. PIKACHU VMAX
He’s the leader of the bunch, you know him well. Chunky Pikachu is back and better than ever. This holographic rainbow representation of our good boy is the standout of the Vivid Voltage set, but it’s not just the name recognition. Sporting a hefty 310 HP and dealing potentially 270 damage, Pikachu VMAX is a force to be reckoned with. Look at that smirk. He knows it.
Are you planning on picking up any Vivid Voltage packs? How about any from the last release, Champion’s Path? What pulls did you get? Let us know!
