5 Basic Tips for Frostpunk Players

Frostpunk came out almost two months ago, but hype and press still haven’t died down. 8Bit Studio really hit it out of the park again, with their last game, This War of Mine, receiving overwhelming praise as well.

Much like TWoM, Frostpunk is incredibly difficult and has a huge learning curve. It’s not an easy game to play, but it’s an experience you don’t want to miss. That being said, here are our 5 tips to help you survive in Frostpunk.

1. Research right away

The very instant you start the game, you’ll have enough resources to build a workshop. The workshop allows you to use up to 5 engineers to research things that will help you out immensely. You can build more workshops to increase the effectiveness, but this maxes out at about 4. Having at least one active workshop is imperative to survival.

You need to be able to gather resources in different ways, and you can also research ways to make the building warmer. On top of this, workshops are the only place you have to upgrade your generator, which is kind of important.  You should build a workshop on your first day, or immediately. It’s an investment you can’t afford to not make.

2. Scout right away

One of the reasons that researching is so important is that it allows you to make a beacon. You can use this beacon to send out scouts to the wasteland, bringing back resources that will let you live a little longer. There are two things you get from scouting that you can get any other way, these things are people and steam cores.

The reason you wanna do this right away is in the end game, you won’t be able to scout, as the storm will kill anyone outside of your city. Anyone you haven’t saved will be dead, and any resources you didn’t grab will be lost. It’s also important to bring your scouts back if the storm gets too close, as it will kill your scouts, as well as take out any cargo they might be carrying.

3. People are your resources and people

This one needs a little more explanation. Frostpunk makes many different statements about human life, especially on how a person’s usefulness ties into if they should be alive or not. Frostpunk also tries to humanize people, as strange as they may sound. People have names and families for a reason. They have needs for a reason. When someone dies, it’s not just Worker #23, it’s Edward Smith, the father of two.

On the other hand, if you constantly think this way, you’ll never get anything done. You’re gonna have to push your citizens to their limits, and it’s for their own good. While managing resources such as coal and wood, you also need to manage your people. Are they warm enough? Is everyone well-fed? Are the sick being treated? These are questions you can’t ignore, or else the game will force you to face them.

4. Use the first few days to collect resources

Despite the overall crushing difficulty of the game, the first few days are relatively easy. It’s a bit of a grace period. You don’t even have to start running your generator until the first night, and it doesn’t take up that much coal. After the first temperature drop, people won’t be able to work in outside conditions, and you’ll need to start thinking of ways to keep things warmThink of the first few days as a grace period. It’s a great time to stockpile on valuable resources that you’ll need later on. You don’t need to build gathering posts for people to collect resources. You’ll have to think about the cold for every decision you make after day four. Pretty much all you have to do is keep everyone housed, and keep the generator running. However, don’t get too content with yourself. This ties into our next tip.

5. Think ahead

This may seem obvious, but it’s true. Don’t ever get too content. If things are going well, make sure they’ll still be going well if the temperature dropped 20°. You should always be making things better. But the truth is, for the most part, things aren’t ever going to be great for you. There are always going to challenges present, and you need to overcome those, or else they’ll pile up.

In order to play this game, you need to be a good multitasker. Sometime you won’t be able to completely fix a problem before another harsher problem comes by. Sometimes you can’t solve a problem with the resources you have at the moment, sometimes you can get started on them, sometimes they’re a breeze. Problems get solved much more easily if they’re considered beforehand.

Conclusion

Frostpunk is a moderately difficult game, especially for people who have a hard time managing resources. How much has this list helped you, did we miss anything? If you have an answer to either of these questions or just want to say something, let us know down in the comments below.
