WWE 2K23 Features and Improvements We Would Like to See

The upcoming WWE 2K23 is surely set to include new features and improvements, following on from the success of WWE 2K22. Match types such as WarGames are still in high demand. There are also various ways in which the series can be improved to continue its return to form.

WWE 2K23 Features and Improvements We Would Like to See

Entering a new year means that WWE WrestleMania season is fast approaching. This also means that the next game is surely on the way. It is yet to be officially revealed, as of writing, but it’s expected to release around March/April just like 2022’s successful WWE 2K22. Speculation has been ongoing about what WWE 2K23 features and improvements fans could expect. The debut of the WarGames match type and more CAW slots have been discussed. Last year felt like a restart for a series that went through a rough period. Visual Concepts may kick on and make their long-term vision truly begin to come to life. Here’s a list of WWE 2K23 features and improvements we would like to see.

Randy Orton Showcase

WWE’s resident ‘Viper’ celebrated his career reaching 20 years in 2022. Randy Orton is regarded by many to be one of the greatest superstars of all time. It would be fitting for him to be under the Showcase spotlight as one of WWE 2K23‘s main features. As a 14-time World Champion, there’s a lot of history that can be revisited in virtual form. Players could enjoy one of his many matches with John Cena as well as contests from Orton’s time in Evolution.

The Legend Killer has a chance of being the cover star

The length of Orton’s career means that his Showcase could include many legends. Mick Foley, Batista and Kurt Angle are some names who could be considered to be among his greatest rivals. It would be the most star-studded list of unlockables seen in a WWE game. I would love to see The Legacy feature too, seeing a young Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. With the quality and quantity of Orton’s match catalogue, it would be very difficult for Visual Concepts to disappoint fans with whatever selection they’d choose.

Increased CAW Slots

100 Create-A-Wrestler slots may seem a lot to the average person. In reality, it’s not enough. Regular WWE 2K22 players have found that these spaces fill up very quickly with custom superstars and alternate attires. There’s a lot of great content on Community Creations, but insufficient storage to download everything you want. Ideally, the number of slots needs to be doubled to 200 as one of WWE 2K23‘s improvements.

Seth Rollins has so many attires that you would need more than 100 slots

Players would benefit from additional attires being assigned their own unique slots, rather than taking up a CAW slot. I’ve used up 25% of spaces just to give some wrestlers a different look. Deleting superstars that I barely use is something I’ve had to do to free up slots. Loading times in the creation menus should also be improved in this year’s release. The more downloaded wrestlers, the longer the load times which can make adding renders or setting attires take far too long.

WarGames

At last year’s Survivor Series event, Head of Creative Triple H brought the popular WarGames match to the main roster for the first time. It’s known for being full of violence and wrestlers performing crazy stunts. It’s the perfect match type to play in a wrestling game, but its use of a massive cage across two rings means it’s a challenge to create for developers. There’s little excuse for its continued absence now however. It’s been featured and talked about on the main TV programming, so it should also be seen in the games.

The Bloodline recently reigned supreme in WarGames

Rumours have swirled that Visual Concepts have attempted to re-create WarGames for years. Hopefully, 2023 is when they’ll hit the jackpot. It could be marketed as a major WWE 2K23 feature. Players unfamiliar with WWE nowadays will be drawn to it just for its chaos. Who doesn’t want to hit a crossbody from the top of a cage onto six guys as The Undertaker? There’s potential for the match to become one of the series’ top match types available.

Better MyRise Storylines

WWE 2K22 introduced MyRise, a reboot of MyCareer that dropped the singular narrative structure in favour for multiple short storylines. The main objective was to win every championship available as your custom wrestler while experiencing every story. Unfortunately, the quality of the storylines lacked in areas. While there was clever use of social media, awkward cutscenes were often copy-and-pasted from Universe mode and some rivalries would suddenly end. You could win a championship then start another story where you are now no longer a champion.

MyRise can become a great mode if given the right improvements

There’s potential for MyRise to be a successful game mode, as long as WWE 2K23 introduces the right improvements. Longer rivalries would be great to allow deeper storytelling and fresh cutscenes. It would also be nice to see storylines connect so that players seamlessly move from one opponent to the next. Maybe they get attacked by someone after successfully defending a title against their rival. More superstar voiceovers are always welcomed too for that extra bit of immersion.

Create-A-Finisher

Creation Suite has always been a highlight in every WWE game. The amount of freedom and creativity that players have is really impressive. There’s always room for more, though. Create-A-Finisher has been absent since WWE 2K14 and is still yet to make its return for reasons unknown. Its comeback as WWE 2K23‘s biggest new creation feature would likely please plenty of fans. Custom finishers are currently the last piece of the puzzle when it comes to creating your own wrestler.

This mode will help players to add realism. It’s not uncommon for some wrestlers, both on the default roster and downloaded, to not have their exact finisher in the game. Young talent are continuing to innovate by introducing some wild-looking athletic new maneuvers. Players could be able to re-create these when downloading or making their favourite independent wrestler, for example. Of course, you can just go over-the-top and create a completely crazy, unrealistic finisher for entertainment purposes. That’s when Create-A-Finisher is arguably at its most fun.

Improved Universe Rivalries

Last year marked another missed opportunity with the Universe sandbox game mode. Additions and improvements were minor at best, and WWE 2K23 can’t afford to repeat this. One area that should be focused on is rivalries. Storylines are a key part of all wrestling. They keep viewers invested and invite them to get emotionally involved. For too long, the rivalry system in the series has been rather bare bones. Rivals are often booked to wrestle every week with minimal cutscenes used to create a story.

Players, like myself, shouldn’t have to rely on imagination in order to enjoy Universe mode. At the very least, the game should provide a helping hand. There should be a list of preset rivalry stories that people can choose from, or they can be given freedom. This can include choosing which cutscenes to insert, writing their own text and customising matches freely. For a series that has so many creative options, it’s odd that this game mode suffers from frustrating restrictions.

Advanced Entrance Creation

A shocking omission from WWE 2K22 was advanced entrance creation. This allowed players to customise wrestlers’ entrances by combining motions, changing lighting, adding pyro etc. Instead, they could only choose to apply either another superstar’s entrance or a preset one. Seeing a custom Jade Cargill coming out exactly how Charlotte Flair does certainly hurts the experience. For WWE 2K23, this is an important feature that needs to reappear.

A good entrance is crucial for any superstar

All past customisation options should return, helping people feel like advanced entrances never went away. Creating an entrance video could do with improvements. Currently, it’s a difficult process that can be confusing especially when including custom images. It pushed me away from using it more, so hopefully it’s more accessible next time round.

Less Gameplay Glitches

Admittedly, this is on my wish-list every year when a new WWE game is right around the corner. Despite Visual Concepts avoiding a buggy mess in 2022 compared to WWE 2K20, there were still plenty of annoying glitches. These included corrupted Universe save files, messy physics, contorting models and more. Quality assurance and development polish need to be increased. Every game suffers from bugs, but this series seems to regularly be plagued with them.

Another 2K20 situation will hopefully never happen again

It’s been disappointing to see 2K22 poorly supported through its lifespan. Updates have been infrequent, mostly concentrating on adding MyFaction content. Some problems that players have reported on social media for many months still exist. Developing an annual game series is never easy. Balance is needed between supporting the current entry and making the next one. However, fixing the most prominent issues should be a high priority. Retaining the trust of consumers is crucial, although ultimately this is down to 2K themselves.

MyFaction Unlockables

MyFaction is a controversial topic when discussing WWE 2K22. As mentioned, updates for the game have focused on adding additional content to the mode. This includes new versions of superstars such as past attires and up-to-date looks. Unfortunately, these are only playable in MyFaction and have to be unlocked/purchased anyway. NXT Sami Zayn and Judgement Day Rhea Ripley are present in the game, but can’t be used in any other modes.

A much-requested improvement from fans for WWE 2K23 is for MyFaction’s hidden characters to also be playable across the whole game once unlocked. Earning them can take up a lot of time which should be fairly rewarded. Those who don’t touch the game mode may feel more inclined to play it, knowing that they can get some bonus wrestlers and attires. This is better for the developers too. Imagine spending loads of time creating models, only to see them locked away where very few players use them. I know I would feel a bit deflated.

More NXT Superstars

NXT, WWE’s developmental show, underwent its 2.0 rebrand a few months before the release of WWE 2K22. Therefore, the majority of the new top stars missed out. This means that fans are surely set to see a lot of series debuts. Bron Breakker, Roxanne Perez, Cora Jade and Carmelo Hayes are just some big names that are expected to appear in 2K23. It’ll be interesting to see if any of the talent are kept behind as DLC. Recent debutants such as Isla Dawn and Axiom may well be on that list.

Will Cora Jade and Roxanne Perez's rivalry continue in WWE 2K23?

As well as NXT superstars, there are questions to be asked on the status of all of the returning wrestlers. Since Triple H took over the Talent Relations role last summer, he has re-hired a lot of people. The likes of Tegan Nox and Johnny Gargano could simply have their 2K22 models re-used with a new colour splashed on their attires. Bray Wyatt though, who last appeared in 2K20, may not be so lucky. He’ll require a completely new character. This kind of uncertainty arguably makes this year’s roster reveal one of the most anticipated in the series’ history.

  1. I wish they would add a story mode like RTWM cause I don’t care for creating a wrestler I just want to take my favorite wrestler and take them on a journey to greatness through the years cause universe mode is not it! It’s boring and nothing like tv or the old story modes
