Will Rollerdrome be Free on PS Plus Extra?

Will more third-party indie games like Rollerdrome release on day one through PS Plus Extra and Premium? According to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, PlayStation’s first-party exclusive games will not be available through PS Plus on day one because PlayStation would be unable to invest as much into its new games at PlayStation Studios.

Will Rollerdrome be Free on PS Plus Extra?

Rollerdrome, a “hybrid shooter-skater” developed by Roll7, is set to release on August 16, 2022. Rollerdrome was revealed on June 2 during the PlayStation State of Play. In a prerecorded gameplay walkthrough posted by PlayStation, we are shown the fourth level of the game. The gameplay itself looks like a mix between Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Sunset Overdrive

Like Stray, this game has gained a lot of traction for looking like a fun, new indie game being published by PlayStation. But that is not where the similarities stop between Rollerdrome and Stray.

Rollerdrome - Official Reveal Trailer

Stray and Rollerdrome

Stray, a third-person cat adventure game set in a cyberpunk city developed by BlueTwelve Studio, was released on PS Plus Extra and Premium for no extra charge on July 19. This was the first game to drop on day one to PlayStation’s updated subscription service. On the same day, PS Plus Extra members received 12 other games including multiple Assassin’s Creed games, two Saints Row games, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

The interesting thing about the timing of these added games was that July 19 was the third Tuesday of July. Historically, PlayStation releases PS Plus games on the first Tuesday of every month.

Rollerdrome’s release date, August 16, is also the third Tuesday of the month. Like Stray, Rollerdrome is exclusive to PlayStation consoles and Steam. This begs the questions: Will Rollerdrome be Free on PS Plus Extra? And, will PlayStation continue to release exclusive indie games on day one?

The Future of PlayStation Plus

In order to be more competitive with Xbox Game Pass, which releases its first-party games on day one, PS Plus needs to include some sort of day one releases as well. However, there are no PlayStation indie games planned for release on the third Tuesday of September as of right now. In my opinion, a bi-monthly release of games for PS Plus Extra and Premium members would be enticing for potential subscribers. This release schedule would also give subscribers less time to become bored with the service.
