Hosoda's Newest Movie Is Called Mirai; Slated For May 2018
According to Variety, popular anime film director Mamoru Hosoda's next feature is titled Mirai and is expected to be completed by May of 2018. The director is known for his work on several critically acclaimed films including The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children.

The feature is set to follow a 4-year-old boy who is struggling to cope with the arrival of a little sister in the family until a mysterious garden in the backyard of the boy's home becomes a portal, allowing the child to travel back in time and encounter his mother as a little girl. This helps the boy see things through a new perspective and helps him become "the big brother he was meant to be."

Thematically, Mirai positions itself around the concept of siblings. Hosoda notes, however, that it's inspired by his own experience as a father as well, acknowledging that Mirai (which can be translated as "future") is the name of both the sister character in the film in addition to his own daughter.

In terms of the screenplay, the director states that he wrote it alone but listened to "opinions and the experiences of the producers." The film is being directed at his very own Studio Chizu, which was established in 2011 and subsequently produced Wolf Children and The Boy and The Beast.
