The event that takes care of all of the feuds from WrestleMania 39 weekend, went down on May 6th, 2023, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. WWE Backlash had some great matches, that included the grueling bout between Cody Rhodes vs Brock Lesnar that went down to the wire. As well as, the exciting matchup that saw The Bloodline vs Matt Riddle, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn go at it. Which revealed some more cracks in The Bloodline when the match was coming to a finish. But, here are some moments that brought the event home also.
The Return Of Carlito
During the end of the epic Bad Bunny and Damian Priest San Juan street fight match, a familiar face returned to the event. A man that was a major part of the Ruthless Aggression Era, and was at the height of WWE in the mid-2000s, was Carlito. He came in to help Bad Bunny and Rey Mysterio. It was great to see Carlito again at a live WWE event. He did his finisher move, the backstabber, and even used the apple. Great stuff indeed.
Zelina Vega Wearing A Puerto Rican Outfit
In what was probably the adorable moment of the night, Zelina Vega came out for her match against Rhea Ripley wearing an outfit in the shape of the Puerto Rican flag. Paying homage to her Puerto Rican roots, she graced the home crowd turf with the heart and determination she displayed for this special night. As much as she showed grit throughout this match against Rhea, in the end, it wasn’t enough to obtain the victory. But, on this particular night, I think it was just having a match in Puerto Rico that put a smile on her face.
Bianca Belair vs Iyo Sky
This was one of the most insane matches of the night, and it wasn’t even what was happening in the ring that made it so. If you didn’t know who Bianca or Iyo was going into the bout, you would think Iyo Sky was the baby face and Bianca was the ultimate heel while watching this match take place due to the crowd reaction from inside the arena in Puerto Rico. That is what made this fight so unpredictable, and that’s why the WWE Universe goes to places from all over the world. It reminds me of the positive reception that Logan Paul received in Saudi in his match with Roman Reigns. Throughout the match, you were thinking that maybe Iyo Sky could possibly win due to the crowd cheering her on. But, at the end of the day…the EST of the WWE showed why she is legit, as she picked up the victory.
Seth “Freakin” Rollins vs Omos
Almost a match of sheer perfection, due to the simple fact that both superstars played their roles to masterpiece levels. Omos is growing into the “monster” heel role nicely, and Seth Rollins is doing the best work of his career as The Visionary, and also as the underdog in these types of matchups. If Omos sticks with just being the ground-and-pound type of heel he needs to be, then he makes for a great addition to any roster he’s on. Unfortunately, he lost yet another high-profile match, so this loss might actually sting him a bit, but hopefully, he can rebound from it. We will just have to wait and see. As for Seth Rollins, always a great opponent to witness. I’m really enjoying his current run as The Visionary.
Solo Almost Strikes Down Jey
The moment when Solo appeared to be conflicted about whether or not to attack Jey was very intense. Jey wondering if he was going to do it, almost looking like he was pleading with him in a confused way, as to what his intentions were. You clearly saw them cracking around this time during their match against Matt Riddle, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens. It truly was a powerful moment of the night.
There you have it, my best moments of WWE Backlash.
