Evil Dead Rise
Releases 21st April 2023 in theaters.
One of horrors most iconic series and creators is returning this April. Evil Dead Rise brings the return of the beloved franchise, with horror legends Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell producing the film and relative newcomer Lee Cronin directing.
The film stars Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic at Hanging Rock) as sisters Ellie and Beth reuniting in Los Angeles as Ellie struggles raising her kids alone. The reunion takes a dark turn however when an evil book is found within the building, unleashing the deadites.
The Evil Dead franchise is a must watch for horror fans, with the series having some of the most entertaining scary movies ever made. Evil Dead Rise is no doubt one of the biggest horror movies releasing this year.
Salem’s Lot
Releases 21st April 2023 in theaters.
Iconic horror writer Stephen King’s 1975 novel Salem’s Lot is receiving a modern remake this April, and with so much star power it’s going to be one of the biggest horror movies of the year. The film is written and directed by Gary Dauberman, known for writing the Annabelle series of The Conjuring movies, and previous Stephen King Adaptation It movies.
Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick) stars as Ben Mears, a writer who comes back to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot, but instead of finding inspiration he finds a vampire preying upon the town. Alfre Woodard (Juanita, The Lion King) also stars in the movie, as does Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones, Overlord).
Stephen King’s works have seen a number of recreations, with the IT series, Doctor Sleep, Pet Sematary and Firestarter. Let’s hope that this one is added to the pantheon of great adaptations. If you enjoy shows like Midnight Mass, you’ll likely enjoy this upcoming film.
Unfortunately there is yet to be a trailer released for the film.
The Pope’s Exorcist
Releases 7th April 2023 in theaters.
Director of the aforementioned Overlord, Julius Avery is creating another horror this April, with The Pope’s Exorcist. This film will be more of a demonic horror, with the source material being the memoirs of Father Gabriele Amorth. The priest claimed to have been a hugely prolific exorcist, and a film based loosely on those stories should make for a very fun horror movie.
Russel Crowe plays the leading role of Father Amorth, with Daniel Zovatto (It Follows) and Ralph Ineson (The Witch) playing Father Esquibel and the Demon respectively. Exactly what direction the film will take is hard to say, but with such strong source material to pull from and a great cast, it will be one of the biggest horror movies coming out this April.
The Tank
Releases 21st April 2023 in theaters.
The Tank, releasing this April, is a horror written and directed by Scott Walker. This one is ideal for those who love creature features. Monster based horrors are less common nowadays, so it’s nice to see a return to a classic genre of horror.
The Tank follows a family who inherit a property near the seas from the father’s mother. The house seems perfect, expect for a strange water tank that has been buried. Inside lurks a dormant creature which will do anything to protect its environment. It’s a set up similar to what horror fans have seen before, however a well-executed revisiting of tropes could make for a great film.
If you love monster movies or fear water, then The Tank will be a great choice for you. Especially if you have lived in a rural area.
Renfield
Releases 14th April 2023 in theaters.
The last on our list of the biggest horror movies releasing this April 2023 is Horror-Comedy Renfield. The film has a strong cast, with Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) starring as Renfield, with Nicholas Cage playing Dracula.
Renfield is based on characters from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, as well as original ideas from Robert Kirkman, one of the creators of The Walking Dead. The story follows the titular character, a thrall of Count Dracula, as he attempts to start a new life in modern New Orleans. To do so he must stand up to his master, inspired when he falls in love with a traffic cop.
The promising premise and stellar cast means this movie will be a delight for those who like dark comedy, or those into horror with friends who a bit more easily frightened.
