There are still some new, and some old, horrors to sink your teeth into. This list is just 5 of the biggest upcoming horror games releasing this September 2022, including everything from Dark Fantasy to Cosmic Horror to even a welcome returning face in the Last of Us Part 1 Remake.

With so many smaller titles releasing this month, there will be a list of indie and smaller horrors at the end that are worth checking out if you are just in need of a little something to play through the month. If none of these games catch your eye, make sure to check out these articles to help scratch that ghoulish itch.

The Last Of Us Part 1 Remake

It’s been almost a decade since The Last of Us first graced our consoles. Now it’s back to do it again. For those who have been living under a rock, The Last of Us is an action/survival horror set in a post apocalyptic America that has been ravaged by fungus that turns people into violent ‘Infected’. It’s fantastic story, well-designed environments and gameplay led it to be an instant classic.

Developers Naughty Dog has stated for the PlayStation blog that ‘Naughty Dog is bringing nearly ten extra years of technical accomplishments and knowledge and channelling those through PlayStation 5 technology to rebuild the modern-day classic from the ground up’. They want to clarify that this isn’t just a remaster. Lead Cinematic Animator Shaun Escayg states in the blog post, “To me, what makes this a remake instead of a remaster is the sum of its improvements.”

The team has worked hard to improve the graphics, animation quality and combat. The PS5 hardware allows for more dynamic encounters, further enhanced by 3D audio and the controller’s haptic feedback. With the aim being to make the definitive version of the game, it’s an exciting time for fans looking to relive the experience with the latest hardware. For this September 2022, it is certainly the biggest horror game releasing this month.

The Last of Us Part 1 Remake releases on 2nd September 2022 for PS5 (PC release TBA).

Ebola 3

Ebola 3 is a survival-horror, with inspiration taken from classic survival-horrors. It looks to be a first-person action horror in the vein of the early Resident Evil games. You must uncover the mystery of what happened in the main characters life, and the clinic on Brut Street that is connected to a zombie outbreak.

It looks like an interesting throwback to classic survival-horror. There’s a mix of shooting, exploration, and puzzles that screams retro horror gaming. The developers have described it as nonlinear, which gives replayability and contains classic game designs elements such as ammo crafting and body deformation of enemies. If you’re after a retro feeling horror, this one may be for you.

Ebola 3 releases on 5th September 2022 on Steam.

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories 2

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories 2 is billed as an action RPG with rogue-like elements. Lovecraftian horrors and monsters fill the randomly generated levels. There are 6 different characters to choose from with various abilities and playstyles. This game picks up where the first one left off. The story seems to be set in the aftermath of a mysterious painting that caused riots and terror amongst the populace. It’s setting of 1920s Paris is a breath of fresh air as well. Publishers Fulqrum Publishing have an eye for fun Lovecraft themed games, with their other recent game Forgive Me Father being a blast.

If the art style and passion of their other works are anything to go by, this one will be a lot of blood soaked fun.

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories 2 releases 13th September 2022 on Steam.

Soulstice

If you enjoy Dark Fantasy games and stories, then upcoming action RPG Soulstice may pique your interest. Set in the Kingdom of Kedias, a land being invaded by powerful creatures called ‘Wraiths, this game appears to be a mix of Devil May Cry and a Souls-like. To combat the Wraith threat, some humans are made into ‘Chimeras’. These are hybrid soldiers made by a union of 2 souls. The play character is one such Chimera, created from two sisters, Briar and Lute. The siblings are sent to reclaim a ruined city, but perhaps the world and its factions more complicated than it seems at first.

The combat looks fantastic for this game and the world design is intriguing. A dark world and story combined with epic combat is a blast, but also something we have seen before. Fingers crossed Soulstice manages to stamp its own legacy on the genre. The conjoined soul element is unique, and the sisterly bond is a great jumping off point for great story telling.

Soulstice releases 20th September 2022 on Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

Beacon Pines

Beacon Pines may look a little out of place in the horror section. However, games such as Night in the Woods have shown that cute games can also have great mysteries. Beacon Pines is set within a mysterious book, which is already a solid setting, and has been described by the developers as ‘Cute and Creepy’.

You play as Luka, the main character and reader of the book, and must sneak out with friends to solve a mystery at the old warehouse. Where this game looks to really stand out is how the book works as a gameplay mechanic. There are different branches of events to explore, and through this you can find charms. These charms allow you to change the wording of the book, drastically changing the story that unfolds. The art style is cute for sure, but I’m curious how they will make this game creepy.

Beacon Pines releases 22nd September 2022 on Steam, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.

Indie/Smaller Games Releasing September 2022

The above games may be the biggest horrors coming out this September 2022, but there are still more releases to sink your teeth into.

  • Half-Life 2 VR mod: exactly what is says on the tin. Revisit the classic in VR. This mod releases 16th September on Steam.
  • Gloomwood: Stealth Horror FPS Gloomwood is coming to early access on the 6th. Gloomwood has the player trapped in a cursed Victorian city and they must escape with stealth and strange weapons.
  • HYPERVIOLENT: If you are looking for a game similar to the original Doom, then HYPERVIOLENT may scratch that itch. Coming out on 8th September, The player must shoot their way through an asteroid mining facility beset by a strange infection and the monsters that come with.
  • Night at the Gates of Hell: Jordan King, the developer, was inspired by Italian zombie movies for this game. Any Lucio Fulci fans may have perked up. This one looks, quite frankly, bizarre. That being said I can’t help but being intrigued by this odd looking first-person survival horror.

So, that’s the biggest horror games releasing this September 2022, which game are you most excited for? Any other horrors coming out this month that you’re going to play? Let us know in the comments!
