The horror games genre is receiving a major boost this March, with some incredible games releasing to satiate the spooky cravings. From remakes of major franchise hits just as Resident Evil 4 to additions to franchises like Bendy and the Ink Machine. Whatever your taste in horror is, there is bound to be something for you this March with so many of the biggest horrors releasing.

Resident Evil 4 Remake
No doubt one of the biggest horror releases of the year, let alone March, is the remake of acclaimed zombie shooter, Resident Evil 4. The previous remakes of the RE series have been celebrated by critics and gamers alike, and with Resident Evil 4 being a franchise highlight, it’s bound to be a blast.
The plot follows returning character Leon Kennedy, a special agent for the US government. He’s been sent to rural Spain to rescue the kidnapped daughter of the president. The mission is anything but simple with the townsfolk being controlled by the Las Plagas parasite. Resident Evil is known for being bombastic and over the top, and the remake comes with new features and updated graphics. There are new side quests, a parry system to replace Quick Time Events and increased mobility and dodging. Whether you are a returning fan or new to Resident Evil, this game should be high on your list of games to play this month.

System Shock Remake
If you like your horror to be a little bit older then there’s the remake of System Shock. This game. This shooter/survival horror has been iconic since its 1994 release. So it’s high time got a remake with the latest tech. The remake comes from Nightdive studios who made the 2015 enhanced edition. The new version comes with updated graphics and revamped controls to make it easier for console players to get to grips with the game. The fantastic story and villain firmly place System Shock in the list of the biggest horror games releasing this March.
System Shock is set on the Citadel Space Station in 2072. The AI controlling the space station, SHODAN, has gone haywire. You play as a hacker racing to escape the facility and prevent the rogue AI from causing anymore death and destruction. The game is considered to be a spiritual predecessor of the Bioshock games, so if you enjoyed those, you will most likely love this game too.

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse Remake
Another of the biggest horror games releasing this March is the latest addition to the Japanese horror series Fatal Frame. Following the success of the remake of Fatal Frame 5, Maiden of Black Water, the 4th entry in the series is receiving an update and western release. The new version will have updated graphics and new costumes so a new generation can be brought into the series. The game was the best selling of the series at release and so looks to be a strong addition to the horror genre.
Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a survival horror, set on the island Rougetsu. You play as 4 different characters exploring the island, with the Camera Obscura, a camera that lets you see and battle ghosts. A suspected serial killer kidnapped 5 girls from the island’s sanatorium 10 years prior, and after the deaths of survivors the remaining victims return to discover the truth about what happened there.

Bleak Faith: Forsaken
Dark Fantasy is also returning this March, with upcoming Souls-like Bleak Faith: Forsaken. This game has a beautiful art style with great use of colours. The trailer also shows a fast paced action style that looks reminiscent of Elden Ring and Dark Souls. The creature design especially looks stellar for this game, with many horrid abominations to fight.
Bleak Faith: Forsaken has you play as a Knight exploring a decaying civilisation, with a colossal building known as the Omni-structure that continues to expand. You must fight your way to the top. Battling everything from skeletons, to spider human hybrids and flying squid like monsters. If you want to play another souls-like, or like dark fantasy settings, then this game will hold your attention as one of the biggest horrors releasing this March.
Bleak Faith: Forsaken releases 10th March on PC.
The Last of Us Part 1 PC Release
The Last of Us has seen a major return to the pop culture consciousness with the smash hit TV show. Fortunately for fans there is more to come. This March sees one of the biggest horror games ever made getting its much-anticipated PC release of the remastered version of the game. Massive improvements to the visuals and gameplay have already been seen on the PS5, and now PC players can finally get their hands on the game. The AI is improved and there are more options for exploration.
The Last of Us Part 1 tells the story of Joel and Ellie. The Cordyceps Fungus has decimated humanity, killer many and turning the others into infected zombie creatures and dreaded Clickers. You control Joel as he escorts the young Ellie, who is immune, across the country. I’ll leave out anything further so as not to spoil the game if you haven’t played it. The remaster also comes with the DLC Left Behind.
The Last of Us Part 1 PC port releases on 28th March on PC.
Indie Offerings
Here is this months selection of smaller titles and indie games that will pique the interest of horror fans.
Dredge: this is a fishing adventure game. However it comes with a dark and sinister plot with secrets hidden in the sea. You must dredge the ocean and explore the archipelago from your fishing boat. Dredge releases on 30th March on PC.
Anthology of Fear: This game is an addition to the anthology horror game type. You play as a man inversitaging his brothers disappereance through a series of liminal horror locations. Each chapter has it’s own tragedy to uncover. Anthology of Fear releases 17th March on PC.
Garten of Banban 2: Another series that meshes scares with cute imagery is Garten of Banban 2. Investigate the bizarre and twisted kindergarden which is strangely abandoned and uncover the truth of this establishment. Garten of Banban 2 releases 3rd March on PC.
