It’s been nearly 2 years without a new Forza game. It’s a long time for Forza because of their annual releases. Ever since Forza Motorsport 4 came to the market, we’ve had a new game coming every year. Motorsport one year, Horizon the other year. It’s a short period to develop a game, but It’s eventually time to step up the game. Turn 10 Studios and Playground Games have extended the development cycle, yet we know very little about the future. So, what can we expect to happen in the future?
Forza Horizon 4
Forza Horizon 4 has been supported with updates frequently. Each month, there’s been an update which includes bug fixes and vehicles. The game, however, is on its 27th update, which is fairly old and has received plenty of content by now. More post-launch content than any other Forza. You may wonder why it’s been supported for such a long time. Isn’t it a waste of money to keep releasing free content? We need to rethink a bit. What would happen if they stopped supporting the game? The whole franchise would slowly die and people would start moving to Forza’s rivals, Gran Turismo Sport or perhaps Project CARS 3. Although the updates aren’t big, it’s enough to make fans busy for a month. Losing your loyal fans to your rivals is probably a company’s biggest fear.
At some point, the game won’t be supported anymore. The fact that the next Forza won’t be out until next year or perhaps in 2022 forces Playground games to deliver content regularly. Also, we have not heard anything about the next Horizon either, which leaves us very clueless as to what could happen. All we should expect is free cars heading to the game as usual. Maybe even a small feature added. Despite the game’s age, I’m very surprised Playground Games has successfully kept their fans busy with Forza Horizon 4 for over 2 years!
We have very little information about this game; however, there are significant points to bring up. What Forza Motorsport 7 was lacking in is quality. Bear in mind that this game was developed within 2 years only. It’s not much for such a large game.
First point to bring up is the quality. It’s aimed to be more that than quantity. Unlike other racing simulators, Forza‘s cars tend to feel very similar or not accurate. Also, the fact that certain cars share the same audio files has really bugged fans. Forza Motorsport 7 has a physics engine that’s been developed for over 10 years, which is very impressive. However, fans would not consider it a simulator because the physics model wasn’t as detailed and realistic as fans would’ve expected. It’s funky handling to some players. To improve the overall experience, Turn 10 stated that the tyre and suspension model will be upgraded for more realism and better experience. The improved physics model will make a huge difference compared to Forza Motorsport 7 handling and the team has put a lot of effort into that. You may also expect the next Forza Horizon title to use similar physics model.
“We have a new way that heat interacts with the tire pressure and we actually have dynamic track temperatures affecting this all. We have dynamic rubbering in on the track. We have a new atmospheric pressure system that accurately has pressure affecting things like air density, affecting aerodynamics and power, as well as the tire pressure. We have an entire new suspension system with new suspension modelling”
– Chris Esaki, Creative Director at Turn 10/Forza Motorsport
Turn 10 Studios has also stated that the game will be developed with help from fans. Yes, it’s legit. In a recent Xbox research program, Turn 10 Studios has let fans vote which type of racing they prefer. Unfortunately, we can not view what other people voted. This means, though, that we’re likely to see more than just circuit racing. It’s about time to upgrade to more than only circuit racing. Gran Turismo and Project CARS features rally and now Forza fans are begging for it!
In short, all focus is being put on the new Forza Motorsport. Meanwhile, Forza Horizon 4 is there to keep fans busy with something. An exceptional, but good plan to keep fans active. It may be a long time until the release of Forza Motorsport, but we’ll have exciting teasers along the way!
