The faithful shall be rewarded. After months and months of patiently waiting, February is right around the corner. Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, Dying Light 2, just to name the heavy hitters. Enough talk, let’s check out February’s selection of major game releases.
1. Horizon Forbidden West
Scheduled to release on February 18, the long-awaited sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn is almost here.
Set in a post-apocalyptic western United States, the game continues the story of Aloy. She sets out to investigate the cause behind the Red Blight, a disease that is plaguing the lands. In order to achieve her objective, Aloy and her companions have to journey across the Forbidden West, an arcane frontier filled with unfamiliar regions and deadly machines.
One of the main additions to the sequel is underwater exploration. These new areas allow the player to uncover the secrets hidden deep underwater, in seas, lakes, and rivers.
After the immense success of its predecessor, Horizon Forbidden West has been on my wish list for a long, long time. If Horizon Zero Dawn is any indication, then this new entry will be a masterpiece. The breathtaking visuals and the depth of the storyline of the original game took me by surprise, and what excites me the most is that it can only get better from here. Also, for me, the addition of new machines and the element of underwater exploration has really turned up the hype surrounding this game.
It is shaping up to be one of those games that every gaming enthusiast should experience, and for that, it has to be included in this selection of major game releases scheduled for February 2022.
2. KINGDOM HEARTS INTEGRUM MASTERPIECE
The Kingdom Hearts series is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch on February 10. Although I’m a big fan of the whole series, my focus here will be on Kingdom Hearts III.
Kingdom Hearts III is set after the events of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. In this game, the protagonist Sora and his friends embark on a journey to find seven guardians of light. These guardians of light are a crucial piece in stopping Xehanort’s plan of starting a second Keyblade War.
The game is set in multiple worlds based on different Disney and Pixar intellectual properties. Sora’s journey will also cross paths with characters from these worlds, like Donald Duck, Goofy, and Mickey.
Square Enix showed that it is possible to merge two great things together, coming up with an even greater product. For me, the inspiring characters and the emotional story are a perfect match. That is what the Kingdom Hearts series is all about.
I’ve had my eye on the Kingdom Hearts series Switch release date for a long time. Being my favorite entry, Kingdom Hearts III provides a truly unique, refined combat system, that perfectly goes along with the overall magical experience, and in my opinion, everyone should play it. Thanks to the Nintendo Switch release, I’m happy that more people will be able to experience this amazing game. And of course, the nostalgia factor has to be considered, and for me, it is probably the biggest reason for the success of the Kingdom Hearts series, and also the reason for its presence on this February 2022 list of major game releases.
3. Elden Ring
Written by George R. R. Martin, one of the most anticipated games of 2022 is finally arriving on February 25.
Elden Ring is an action role-playing game taking place in the realm of the Lands Between. The game takes place after the destruction of the Elden Ring and the scattering of its shards, the Great Runes. The player embarks on a journey to find all the Great Runes and ultimately restore the Elden Ring.
It would be a crime if I didn’t add Elden Ring to this selection of game releases coming in February 2022. The back-to-back winner of the Most Anticipated Game category in the 2020 and 2021 Game Awards is a long time coming, and it is finally right around the corner. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the Souls series, as well as Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and of course, written by the one and only George R. R. Martin, Elden Ring has everything to be one of the best games of the year, if not the best.
I understand that Souls-like games are not for every gamer’s taste. If you are just now hearing about this magical world, well, you’ve arrived just in time. I believe Elden Ring will be an amazing game for all kinds of Souls fans. In my opinion, both the hardcore veterans and the noobie newcomers will love this new game.
4. Total War: Warhammer III
Part of the Total War series, Total War: Warhammer III is set to release on February 17.
Featuring a turn-based strategy system and real-time tactics, just like its predecessors, Total War: Warhammer III will feature a campaign map twice the size of the map that appeared in Total War: Warhammer II, in the Eye of the Vortex campaign. In this campaign, players will be able to move their troops around the map, manage settlements and diplomatic relations with other factions, and engage in real-time combat when necessary.
The game will also introduce a mode where players can fully customize their battles, as well as online multiplayer battles. Every player that owns races from the first two games will have them available for the new entries’ multiplayer mode.
As a big fan of the Total War series, and overall turn-based strategy games, this is a game that I am very hyped to try. If the developers behind the series continue their streak, and based on its predecessor, Total War: Warhammer II, then this third game will definitely be a home run. Its innovative and exciting campaign hooked me as soon as I pressed play, with great depth in each adventure and stunning visuals. For me, the basis of an innovative and original strategy game is there from previous entries. The developers just need to work on that same winning formula, and the result will for sure be an exciting and rich experience.
I’m really hoping that this new entry builds on that success, delivering one of the best Total War experiences created, and for that, I chose to include it in this selection of major game releases coming in February 2022.
5. Dying Light 2 Stay Human
Last but not least, we’ve got Dying Light 2 Stay Human, scheduled to release on February 4.
Set in a world devastated by a zombie apocalypse, the game stars a new protagonist, a man named Aiden Caldwell. Dying Light 2 features a massive open-world setting based in Europe, with a map four times bigger than its predecessor.
Having a strong presence in the game, the parkour system features multiple moves such as sliding, leaping, wall running, and climbing edges. As for the combat system, the game remains mostly melee-focused, with all weapons having a determined lifespan, degrading as the player uses them. There are also upgradable long-range weapons like crossbows and shotguns.
In a genre that I find over-saturated, the Dying Light series is truly a breath of fresh air, with original and innovative mechanics, like the introduction of parkour, that positively shape the overall user experience. The original game exceeded my expectations. The robust gameplay, polished visuals, and the fact that the game truly freaked me out are just some of my highlights. And if the success of the original Dying Light is not enough for you, the developers have announced multiple new mechanics, like stealth tactics, while at the same time improving the old ones.
Every improvement is a welcomed addition to an already great series. Dying Light 2 Stay Human really is shaping up to be one of the best in the genre.
We have just entered the new year, and the gaming industry already has truly remarkable experiences for us. 2022 sure is shaping up to be a great year for gaming fans.
