Amnesia: The Bunker

Unfortunately, this was delayed last month, but it seems it’s coming out early this June on the 6th. Frictional Games and the Amnesia franchise have had a firm grip on the horror community since the legendary Dark Descent released, and now we are finally getting the latest in the series, The Bunker. Set in the trenches of World War 1 you play as Henri Clément, a French Solider trapped in a bunker. Something stalks you from the shadows however, and you must use everything at your disposal to escape.

With a brand new and intense setting, the series looks to continuing experimenting with it’s gameplay. There are new compelling features such as a revolver with limited ammo, crafting and a semi-open world with a multiple solutions. Whether it’s your first experience with the series, or you’re a returning fan, the pedigree of Amnesia means this is a must play for horror fans. Amnesia: The Bunker is no doubt one of the biggest horror games of June and the entire of 2023.

Undead Citadel

With the huge potential VR has for the horror genre, it’s fantastic to see new games being developed for this technology. Undead Citadel is one such game, making it one of the biggest horrors of June, especially with the great looking gameplay. The game has you play as a night in a land beset by undead monsters. You must delve deep into the citadel and find the origins of the zombie plague.

Whilst perhaps too action-packed to be a true horror, the world building and hordes of enemies give it that terrifying tinge. You must hack, slash and crush your way forward in the first-person VR combat. It looks like a screamingly good time for those of us with VR, with gory combat and delightful environments.

Undead Citadel releases June 8th on PC.

Layers of Fear

Layers of Fear was a popular psychological horror when released back in 2016. Now, 7 years later it is receiving a remake. However, it is proclaimed as the definitive experience of the series. The remake includes Layers of Fear 1 & 2, as well as all the DLCs. The remake is built on Unreal Engine 5 and comes with a plethora of upgrades such as ray tracing and 4k resolution. Layers of Fear has left its mark on the narrative driven horror genre, and this release is a great opportunity for fans new and old to experience it again.

Layers of Fear 1 & 2 and the DLCs tell the stories of a painter, writer, and actor. All of whom find themselves in ever changing locations as their sanity cracks and they attempt to finish their master pieces. Solve puzzles, stay alive and uncover the secrets of the world in one of the biggest horror games of June.

Aliens: Dark Descent

Aliens and the Xenomorph have been a staple of the horror genre for decades. Games based on the series have been hit and miss, with amazing games such as Alien: Isolation, as well as some disappointments like Colonial Marines. The latest addition to the series is the upcoming Aliens: Dark Descent. This game is a squad-based tactics game, where you lead your squad of marines against the Xenomorph outbreak on the planet Lethe.

The game boasts some interesting features, such as permanent team losses requiring careful management of your soldiers and resources, as well as a host of enemies, both iconic and brand new that adapt to your strategies. Squad based horrors are fairly rare, but with such a major name behind it, this game has to make the list of the biggest horror games of June.

Trepang2

If you really want to blast away enemies in all the absurd gory glory of the horror genre than Trepang2 will be right up your alley. Perhaps best compared to Doom, this game is action-packed. Set in the distant future you are a solider who awakens in a black site. However, your combat abilities are beyond anything a human should be able to do. Massacre your way through the site as you look for answers and uncover threats even greater than you.

Trepang2 looks absolutely brutal, with heaps of viscera and blood soaking you as you solve the mystery. This time around you are more akin to a monster than the humans you face. If you like violence to go with your horror, then this game is for you.
