Thor: Love and Thunder

Releases July 8 in US theatres.

It’s a superhero, fantasy, sci fi, action extravaganza in Marvel’s newest blockbuster! Natalie Portman returns to the MCU and her Jane Foster role. However, this time she gets a more significant part to play as Mighty Thor.

Jane’s original Mighty Thor run is one of the most beloved and heartbreaking Thor stories in Marvel Comics’ history. So, there are big hopes from fans that writer and director Taika Waititi’s natural humor and charm showcased in Thor: Ragnarok can translate well with his MCU take on the famous Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman comic run. Chris Hemsworth still leads the production, with the Guardians of the Galaxy crew and fan favourite Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) returning as well. It also wouldn’t be a Marvel movie without a few new megastar cast members. Christian Bale and Russell Crowe make up this quota, starring in very spoiler-y roles that I won’t reveal here, but official promotion will, so beware!

If superhero fare isn’t for you, it might not be a big deal. However, for a vast majority of moviegoing audiences, Thor: Love and Thunder is one of the biggest fantasy and sci fi movies releasing July 2022. It’s also one of the biggest movies of the year, regardless of genre.

The Sea Beast

Releases July 8 on Netflix.

A Netflix animation original for all the family, The Sea Beast is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chris Williams (Moana, Big Hero Six). It stars Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Dan Stevens, Marianne Jean-Baptise, and British comedy legend Kathy Burke.

The story is set in an alternate era where terrifying beasts roam the seas, and monster hunters are celebrated heroes. Karl Urban plays the renowned monster hunter Jacob Holland, who finds a young stowaway Maisie Brumble (Zaris-Angel Hator) on his fabled ship, gaining an unexpected ally. Together, they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters, making history along the way.

The Sea Beast is one of the last movies made by Netflix’s animation branch before many employees were fired after the division was massively scaled back. Judging from the promise of the trailer and early review impressions, it seems even more of a frustrating decision from the streaming giant. Regardless of the animation department’s history and future, The Sea Beast looks like a beautiful film for all the family, making it one of the biggest fantasy or sci fi movies releasing July 2022.

The Sacred Spirit

Releases July 18 on VOD.

It’s already streaming on Arrow, but if you don’t have a subscription and are interested in a tragicomedy with major sci-fi leanings, then you can rent or buy The Sacred Spirit on VOD this July in the US.

Set in Spain, the film follows José (Nacho Fernández) and the other members of the ufology association Ovni-Levante, who meet weekly to discuss potential extraterrestrial messages and abductions. A tragedy strikes the groups, leaving José as the only person who knows about a cosmic secret that could alter the human future. I’m not saying it’s aliens (but it’s aliens). Meanwhile, a search is on the way for a girl who went missing some weeks before the Ovni-Lvante incident.

There aren’t many reviews for the independent Spanish production written and directed by Chema García Ibarra, but a small selection of critics have been overwhelmingly positive about it. The movie’s moody presentation weaved with a dark comedy tone has gone over well. With a focus on characters and their reactions to this bizarre situation, The Sacred Spirit may not have huge production values, but it’s still one of the biggest fantasy or sci fi movies releasing July 2022.

Nope

Releases July 22 in US theatres.

Jordan Peele turns his talents to a more overt sci-fi tale than he’s previously told in his horror movies with the hotly anticipated Nope.

Although Get Out and Us have slight science fiction elements to their horror, none of them had aliens. Well, what appears to be aliens. In our closest look at the movie’s plot yet, the latest trailer sees brother and sister OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald (Keke Palmer) try to capture evidence of abnormal events involving both animals and people occurring near their family ranch. Other details about the film are being kept under wraps for now. Which includes the exact role Ricky ‘Jupe’ Park (Steven Yeun) plays in the story.

Although not much else is known about the film, if you’ve ever seen a Jordan Peele movie you’ll know what to expect —in that you really won’t know what to expect. Both Get Out and Us had the same sort of dark social tone that’s likely to appear in Nope, but followed two very different narratives. I can’t wait to see what Peele does for his third feature film, which looks to have all the thematic and directorial skill he’s made a name for himself with. Next to Thor: Love and Thunder, Nope is definitely the biggest fantasy or sci fi movie releasing July 2022. It could likely be one of the best of the year as well.

Green Lantern: Beware My Power

Releases July 26 on VOD and DVD/Blu-Ray.

Hal Jordan is arguably the most well-known character to use the moniker of the Green Lantern. However, there have been many other characters that have worn the famous power ring and taken on the name. One of them is former U.S. Marines sniper, John Stewart.

From WB Animation, Green Lantern: Beware My Power tells an alternate origin story to John Stewart’s introduction to his power ring and the Justice League. Aldis Hodge voices John in the new animated feature. It also stars Jimmi Simpson as Green Arrow, Ike Amadi as Martian Manhunter, Jamie Gray Hyder as Hawkgirl, and Brian Bloom as Adam Strange. With the help of these new friends, John must journey into the heart of a galactic Rann/Thanagar war and somehow succeed where all other Green Lanterns have failed.

This is the fifth film in the animated Tomorrowverse universe which started in 2020 with Superman: Man of Tomorrow. It was followed by Justice Society: World War II and two parts of Batman: The Long Halloween. If you’re a fan of DC Comics and its cosmic stories, you can enjoy Green Lantern: Beware My Power whether you’ve seen the previous Tomorrowverse movies or not, making it one of the biggest fantasy or sci fi movies releasing July 2022.
