10 Retro Games That Should get Remakes

Retro games are getting plenty of remakes these days. Publishers are giving some classic titles an entirely new lease of life on the latest consoles. The list below includes 10 retro games that would be well worth reviving on the latest consoles.

10 Retro Games That Should get Remakes
Retro game remakes revamp previous games from antiquated consoles. They usually keep the original game largely the same, but give them a notable graphical overhaul. Duck Tales Remastered and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD are two examples of remakes that gave their original games a new coat of paint. These are a few of the great retro games that could be revived in much the same way.

Alex Kidd in Maracle World

Alex Kidd was SEGA's official mascot before Sonic burt on the gaming scene. There were a number of Alex Kidd platform games, among which was the original Alex Kidd in Miracle World, on the Master System. Whilst the game has been re-released on Wii Virtual Console, as of yet there has not been a remake of this classic platform game.

A remake on the Nintendo Switch or 2DS, with a considerable amount of extra graphical gloss, would give Alex a new lease of life. A new two player mode, including Alex Kidd counterpart Stella, could also be added to the original.

Super Mario World

Super Mario World is one of the best games in the Mario series. This was the 16-bit Super NES Mario game that was the first in the series to include Yoshi. Mario also became the caped crusader with a feather that sent him airborne.

To date, there has not been a notable remake of this great platform romp. A Super Mario World remake on the 3DS, 2DS or Switch could give it extra graphical gloss so that it's more comparable to the New Super Mario Bros games. Some new hidden levels could also be added to the Dinosaur Land map.

Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong is a historic 1980s arcade game that first included Mario. In it Mario jumped barrels, across numerous construction sites, tossed down by Donkey Kong to save the princess. Now its included on various websites as a flash game. Further sequels, such as Donkey Jr and Donkey Kong 3, expanded on the original game.

All the original levels from the Donkey Kong game could be restored with updated graphics and audio on the 3DS. Nintendo could also add more new levels to the original, and include Donkey Jr and Donkey Kong 3 as part of a compilation pack. A classic platform game would then be regenerated on the 3DS.

Call of Duty

The Call of Duty games are among the most exciting first-person shooters with great multiplayer modes. Unlike the current Call of Duty titles the original games in the series were historical first-person shooters set in the 1940s. They included a number of the battles from that period.

A Call of Duty remake would return to its historic roots with a graphical update to make the original game comparable with the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Added to that some new guns from the era, and extra multiplayer modes, could be included in the remake.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Nintendo has already introduced a few Zelda remakes. Among them the The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. However, there's still a few great Zelda games that could be remade on the 3DS and Switch.

Majora's Mask was a worthy sequel to Ocarina of Time on the N64. This was among the more original additions to the series that could be restored in much the same way as Ocarina of Time on the 3DS. However, as an alternative the remake could be added to the Nintendo Switch for an even greater graphical gloss over.

Super Mario Land

Super Mario Land was one of the Game Boy's launch games that millions are no doubt familiar with. It's fairly similar to the Super Mario Bros platform games which were on the NES. Except, of course, that as a Game Boy game it had no colour. In Super Mario Land, the mysterious Tatanga alien also replaces Bowser.

The Nintendo 2DS XL is an obvious console for a Super Mario Land Color remake. With that console, the game could be revitalized in glorious colour. The audio could also be given a boost with enhanced audio tracks from the original game, and perhaps some new ones.

Cannon Fodder

War has seldom been so much fun as in the first Cannon Fodder game. This is a military-themed action game that includes small squads of four soldiers with which to shoot through its various missions. In each of Cannon Fodder's missions the soldiers must wipe out all the enemy troops with their machine guns, and destroy buildings with missile launchers and grenades. Virgin ported the game over to various consoles such as the Super NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy and the Jaguar.

Bring back Cannon Fodder with a remake that would retain its original top-down perspective. The developers could add some additional sparkle with more 3D buildings and landscapes, similar to the Cannon Fodder 3, but keep all the levels from the original. Some of the multiplayer options from the sequels could also be added to the Cannon Fodder remake.

Zombies ate My Neighbours

Zombies ate My Neighbours was one of those games that had a cult following, but minimal sequels. Nor have there been any remakes of this Super NES game. In Zombies ate My Neighbours its left to Zeke and Julie to rescue their neighbours from zombies in shopping malls, pyramids, castles and other areas. Aiding them are a variety of arsenal, and other items, that are picked up on the various levels.

The game could be resurrected on various console formats. Bring it out on the PlayStation 4 with more engrossing audio and revamped 3D graphics. However, the remake should keep the top-down perspective from the original.

Kirby's Dreamland

Kirby is a big Nintendo series. This is a simple 2D platform game series that has had multiple sequels on various Nintendo consoles. The Kirby Dream Collection included six of the original Kirby games, but they were not updated remakes.

Of the games included in the Dream Collection, Kirby's Dreamland would be suitable for a remake. As a Game Boy game a color overhaul would sufficiently restore it on the Nintendo 3DS. In addition, Nintendo could also add new levels and multiplayer options to the game.

Zelda: Link's Awakening

Zelda: Link's Awakening is another great Zelda game that should get a remake. This is the Game Boy Zelda, and it was the first game in the series that Nintendo released on a handheld console. Although the Game Boy Color gave the game a little bit more color, that was hardly a remake. It would be great to see a remake of Link's Awakening on the 3DS that would give the original game a significant graphical and audio overhaul. The rest of the game need not be changed greatly, but the remake could include some new regions to explore on Koholint Island without altering the plot in any way.

A few industry insiders have speculated that Nintendo is planning to launch a remake of Link's Awakening on the 3DS. That remake is reputedly coming under the direction of the Grezzo team that developed A Link Between Worlds. However, Nintendo or Grezzo have confirmed nothing about a Link's Awakening remake as of yet.

Those are 10 retro games that should have remakes. With updated graphics, audio and some further refinements they could also be great games on the Nintendo Switch, 3DS, 2DS, Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Who knows, perhaps a few of them might one day be remade.
