6 Cuphead Bosses That Made Me Question Life

A brawl is surely brewing for Switch owners next week! Cuphead’s announcement for the Nintendo Switch has excited many fans and has also paved the way for new comers to the 2D, side-scrolling, run ‘n gun platformer. Described by some as the "Dark Souls" of platforming, Cuphead features many boss fights throughout, and make no mistake about it, each boss is creatively challenging featuring awesome level design and unique phases. But here are some standout boss fights that made me and I’m assuming many others lose their minds. Switch owners, strap in for a ride and maybe insure your consoles!

6 Cuphead Bosses That Made Me Question Life

THE DEVIL

As difficult as it was, the fight with the Devil was surprisingly not as hard as other boss fights mentioned below. But I had to include this fight as it was just pure epic. The music right down to the incredible animations you witness during each phase is just awesome. You’ll be dodging spells, imps, flaming poker chips, axes, skulls and the Devil’s tears. Those damn tears! Sounds like a final boss fight, right?

Grim Matchstick

Grim Matchstick
I’m trying to think of a way to express how much I hate this guy’s face(s) without swearing. Grim Matchstick will challenge your platforming skills as well as your mental strength. Like many of the bosses, Grim Matchstick has multiple phases each challenging in its own aspect. Off the bat, you have to carefully manoeuvre around clouds that appear in irregular patterns while you dodge a fair variety of attacks from old Grimmy, one of them being what I can only describe as flaming meteors swerving around the screen. His annoying tail popping up at the worst moments and the rings he shoots from his eyes doesn’t help much either. Phase 2 requires you to look out for a marching band of tiny fire troops walking out of Matchstick’s mouth, who for some reason decide to jump out at you at the most inopportune moments.

But it’s phase 3 that broke me. Grim transforms into a hydra and shoots fireballs in your direction which you must avoid while clouds drag you in towards the three headed dragons ugly face. Doing all this while trying to do some damage, you must be careful to not shoot the balls of fire as they end up exploding, forming into smaller balls of fire that disperse on the screen. After you survive the bombardment of fireballs, old Grimmy then decides to transform one of his heads into a flamethrower! Grim Matchstick is for sure one of the hardest bosses on Cuphead.

Rumor Honeybottoms

Rumor Honeybottoms
At this stage of the game, Rumor Honeybottoms seriously tests you on almost everything you’ve learned from previous boss battles. There are so many different attacks during each phase that I don’t even know where begin. Essentially, the level requires you to platform vertically while dodging a myriad of attacks, including: bees that appear in the form of bullets, a triangle that shoots out smaller triangles and an orb that apparently has a homing-like device installed in it that you can thankfully parry. Of course, you have to do all of this while trying to hit the queen bee herself who has very specific hitboxes during different stages. In her final phase, she turns into a plane that fires fists in your direction. Survive that? She then attempts to cut you in half with a saw-like arm that takes up half the screen. I’ve noticed that she doesn’t appear in many people’s lists but for me, she was definitely a test of my skills and patience.

King Dice

King Dice
Prepare for a long and hard battle folks. King Dice has you rolling dice and moving places on a roulette board in which you must fight a minimum of 3 mini-bosses. If you roll poorly, you can face up to 9 mini-bosses before you go one on one with him. Like every other boss fight, paying attention to your HP is obviously important but with King Dice, it’s even more critical as you really don’t want to get hit in the earlier mini-boss fights. You seriously need as much HP as you can have before you finally get to the King himself. Make sure your parry skills are up for the task because man oh man you’re going to need it.

Cala Maria

Cala Maria
Oh boy, Cala Maria is difficult to describe. Imagine Medusa controlling the sea and its creatures, including puffer fish, electric eels and snakes, each with unique attacks alongside having the ability to spit out ghost pirates she’s eaten. Yeah, Cala Maria is one tough cookie. What makes Cala Maria so difficult is that she has an attack that can’t be dodged where much like Medusa, she turns you into stone and freezes you (for a few seconds thankfully). This attack is consistently used through phase 2 and becomes particularly irritating during phase 3 as you are required to navigate through a narrow tunnel as you dodge attacks in the form of skulls. Did I mention the awkwardly placed spikes along the way? As you can imagine, it’s pretty difficult to dodge when you are rendered useless in a stone figure. You also don’t have much control of your loadout options as this is another boss fight that has you navigating in a plane.

Dr. Kahl's Robot

Dr. Kahl's Robot
This boss fight put me through so much emotional trauma, yet it is not only my favourite boss in Cuphead but in any game I’ve played. Stockholm syndrome maybe? Dr. Kahl and his Iron Giant inspired robot is a long fight my friends. Endurance is key here, as you’ll be going through 2 rather lengthy phases and a final phase that feels like an eternity to complete. You’ll be facing Kahl and his robot in a plane so kiss all the weapons you’ve bought good-bye. Phase 1 you’ll be dodging laser beams, laser bots, the robots head cannon and homing bombs. Phase 2, look out for more homing bombs and Dr. Kahl who rides his robot around the screen like a rocket. Phase 3? You know what, I’m not even going to try to describe phase 3. I strongly advise you to watch this phase online if you haven’t played the game. Or better yet, let it be a surprise because I’m sure the moment you witness it, you’ll be questioning life itself.

Dr. Kahl’s cackle is one that still rings in my ears today.

Well, these were the bosses I struggled with during my Cuphead adventure. Did you have a favourite boss? Did I miss out on a boss you struggled with? Drop a comment below! And Switch users, good luck my friends!
