You'll Be Able to Change Your PSN ID from Tomorrow Onward

Sony has finally revealed you'll be able to change your PSN ID starting tomorrow. While this sounds nice in theory, there are still a few issues you might want to consider.

You'll Be Able to Change Your PSN ID from Tomorrow
If you made your PSN account back when you were young and stupid, then I have good news for you. Starting tomorrow, you'll be able to change your PSN ID! I'm sure 420_KonvictKilla is crying tears of joy right now. I'll spare you copying in the whole FAQ from Sony on name changes and just give you the most important stuff. If you want to read the whole thing then click here.

In a nice move, you get one free name change. After that, it's $9.99/£7.99. However, if you're a PS Plus subscriber, then it's even cheaper for you. PS Plus users get half off the normal price so you can change your name for just $4.99/£3.99. There are no restrictions on how many times, or how often you change your name and you can even revert to a previous name for free.

There's only one drawback, some of you might remember that back when Sony first tested name changes they mentioned some issues which are still present. Changing your ID might cause issues with any game published before April 1st, 2018. These issues include:

  • Your previous Online ID may remain visible to you and other players in some areas.
  • You may lose progress within games, including game saved data, leaderboard data, and progress towards Trophies.
  • Parts of your game and applications may not function properly both online and offline.
  • You may lose access to content (including paid-for content) that you may have acquired for your games including content like add-ons and virtual currency.

Thankfully, Sony has tested a ton of games and they've been able to identify games which might have some problems with PSN ID changes. You can find the list of games here. I know I'll be making use of my first free name change when the feature launches tomorrow.
