Mario and Sonic, two great rivals in video game history, are going back to the Olympics in 2020—this time in their hometown of Tokyo, Japan.
Sega announced at their annual fan event Sega Fes 2019 that they're developing Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, which will be due out in Winter 2019. According to the IOC's official video game website, a Japan-exclusive arcade version of the game will come out next year, as well as the standalone Sonic Olympic game for Android and iOS, and an official game where you can create your own avatar and compete against players from around the world, which will be on the Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games made its debut on the Wii in 2007 to promote the Beijing Olympic Games the following summer. Later games in the series were released for the Wii and the Wii U, but the last game that came out before this announcement was Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the latter console, which received mixed reviews due to the game being too similar to its predecessors. It's interesting to see SEGA pit Sonic and Mario in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics considering they skipped the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang for licensing reasons.
I find it kind of cute that they decided to cover up Sonic and his male teammates with new athletic uniforms for a change.
