Spyro Reignited Trilogy gets subtitles in latest patch

Cutscene subtitles are imperative in helping gamers understand the storyline of the game, especially gamers with disabilities. Spyro Reignited Trilogy should've been no different in providing subtitles when it launched four months ago, but Activision never thought of including them in the game, which infuriated deaf and/or hard of hearing gamers. The latest update has rectified that wrong.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy gets subtitles in latest patch
Spyro fans will now be able to understand what the purple dragon and his friends, allies, and enemies are saying in the cinematic cutscenes for Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

Activision updated Spyro Reignited Trilogy Tuesday with a patch that included "subtitles in all languages (across all three games) for previously unsupported cinematics," giving players the option to switch them on or off in the game's Options menu. The addition of cutscene subtitles also comes with "character headers to identify active speakers; succinct line splits for readability; and colored text for improved character association in most languages."

The inclusion of the most-needed standard accessibility feature within Spyro Reignited Trilogy comes just four months after deaf and/or hard of hearing players expressed their grievances to Activision for failing to provide subtitles, even though they were incorporated in general gameplay during character interactions, upon the game's release.

When Activision heard the complaints about the lack of cutscene subtitles from their fans, instead of admitting their mistake in neglecting to incorporate that option, they said in a statement to GamePit that "there's no industry standard for subtitles," which isn't true because most games have subtitles, but don't have an "Off" switch for them. However, they did say they would evaluate the issue out of "care about the fans' experience especially with respect to accessibility for people with different abilities."

Now, four months after the fact, Activision took those concerns seriously. They've learned that cutscene subtitles are indeed a gold standard in the video game industry, and that if the game they're remaking didn't have subtitles in the original version, include them—don't exclude them from the remake for the sake of fan service.
