The development studio that brought the world Pokemon Go has been working with another ultra-popular intellectual property, and recently showed off a first look at the upcoming Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

Players will begin Wizards Unite as a new recruit in the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, created in part by the Ministry of Magic, as they work to solve a mystery simply called The Calamity. The Calamity has caused trace amounts of magic to pop up throughout the Muggle world and wizards the world over are being asked to help contain the outbreak. The magic seeping into the Muggle world can take a number of forms, including artifacts, beasts, and people.

Players will be able to select from three professions to specialize in. Aurors, Magizoologists, and Professors each have a unique set of skills and abilities to make use of.

Just like Pokemon Go and Ingress, this Niantic title will have players trekking across the real-world to find where magic is popping up. Players may come across stray magical items such as broomsticks or a Niffler, called Traces, which can be triggered to help find Foundables.

Foundables will pop up in a variety of locations such as monuments, libraries, and parks. This should be very familiar to players of Ingress and Pokemon Go, and may even make use of the same list of locations as those games. Foundables will take a number of forms, such as Harry Potter recieving a Dementor's Kiss. Players will see this in augmented reality on their screen, and must trace over a glyph in order to save Harry and return him to the wizarding world.

Players will be rewarded for protecting Foundables and sending them back to the wizarding world, but will be limited in the amount of Spell Energy they have. Fret not though, as throughout the world there will also be in-game Inns where players can visit to replenish their Spell Energy.

The current weather conditions, time of day, and location of an area can also affect the types of ingredients players find using the in-game map. These ingredients are used to create potions which will help with different aspects of the game.

Portmanteaus can also be found throughout the wizarding world which will act as Portkeys, transporting players to recognizable locations such as Ollivander’s Wand Shop.

Just as Pokemon Go has Gyms, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will have Fortresses throughout the map to give Wizarding Challenges. These real-time battles will bring players together to defeat enemies such as Dementors, Death Eaters, or Cornish Pixies, and will reward the brave with rare Foundables. Challenging a Fortress with wizards of other professions at your side is promised to make taking them down easier.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is set for a non-specific 2019 release, but Android users can pre-register for a chance to get early access to the game.
