From uniting gamers to building a million-dollar Esports industry, Fortnite is one of the most influential games in gaming history. Fortnite is a game that literally changed the world, not the gaming world, but the entire planet Earth. While some people may believe that Fortnite is just a hype train or a bubble that’s bound to burst, one thing is for sure. The hype train is still rolling and making millions of dollars while the game is still technically in early access. While there are tons of Battle Royale games currently on the market, none of them have achieved what Fortnite was able to achieve. Here are 5 reasons why Fortnite is better than PUBG and Black Ops 4 and all the other battle royales on the market.
1.Kid Friendly / Family Friendly
Fortnite is often accused of being too “kiddy” and too cartoony. However, catering to the younger market is a key factor of Fortnite’s international success. What sets Fortnite: Battle Royale apart from almost every other battle royale game on the market? Unlike PUBG and Black Ops 4, Fortnite has no blood and no gore. You’d be hard-pressed to find an entertaining shooting game that isn’t filled with bloodbaths and violent scenes. This is the same reason why Splatoon was such a big seller for Nintendo. By keeping the game rated Teen or PEGI 12 with no blood or gore, parents are more open to letting their kids play the game. Convincing mommy or daddy, however, to let their child play PUBG or Black Ops 4 is a whole other story.
2.Unique Gameplay: Building
While PUBG may have paved the way for Fortnite in terms of bringing the battle royale genre to the mainstream, Fortnite improved upon it. Every first person shooter follows a simple formula: you spawn, pickup weapons, and shoot people. However, in battle royale games there is no respawning and battle royale games feature large maps with upwards of 100 players in each game. The battle royale genre follows a similar formula: load in, loot up, shoot people.
However, in Fortnite: Battle Royale the combat mechanics are unlike any other game we’ve ever seen before, let alone any battle royale game on the market today.
In Fortnite, combat isn’t as simple as merely shooting people and having better aim. By introducing building mechanics, Fortnite created a shooting game experience like no other before which requires just as much strategy as it requires aim and precision. Fortnite isn’t as simple as pointing and spraying or pointing and tap firing. In Fortnite, often building is more important and players must seek the best position before taking aim. This unique gameplay is what separates Fortnite from every other game on the market.
3. Variety of Weapons
While other games like PUBG and Black Ops 4 focus on realism, Fortnite focuses on fun and creating the most enjoyable and competitive experience possible. Some would even say that Fortnite has too much variety when it comes to weaponry. However, introducing special weapons/items, such as the Grappler or the guided-missile, changes up strategy and gameplay drastically. This constant change of weaponry gives players something to look forward to every time a new update approaches.
4. Esports / Streaming
Before Fortnite, streaming games on Twitch or streaming as a career was a niche and underground sort of realm within the gaming industry. Now it seems like everyone and their grandmother wants to buy a camera and stream their Fortnite runs. We see people of all ages posting streams on Youtube, Twitch, and Facebook, all praying to become the next Ninja and be paid to do the thing they love most: playing video games. Search “Ninja” on Google and you no longer get the picture of an ancient Japanese assassin. Instead, you see a skinny white kid with colorful hair making millions off of steaming Fortnite. If you think the younger gamer base creates a less competitive atmosphere, try watching some of the streamers play.
As well, Epic Games has been incredibly supportive of the competitive Fortnite scene. Numerous skirmishes and tournaments are being held throughout the year with incredible cash prizes.
5. Fortnite Made Gaming Mainstream
Maybe it was the unique gameplay; maybe it was genius marketing, but somehow Fortnite made video gaming cool. Some professional athletes, celebrities, artists, and even Drake took to the Fortnite servers to get some gaming in, sometimes hooking up with professional streamers. It seemed like people who hadn’t even been into shooters were happy to give Fortnite a try. Due to it’s more family friendly nature, Fortnite is also a game that parents feel more comfortable playing with their children. Because of these various factors, Fortnite just seemed to hit every market they were aiming for.
