This is not a drill: PSN name changes are coming

Take heed, strugglers; PSN name changes are coming soon. No longer will you be waking up in a cold sweat thinking about that awful name you came up with when you were 12 years old. All that said, there is still a catch, as there always is.

This is not a drill: PSN name changes are coming
All those sleepless nights spent regretting your PSN ID are over. No longer, will you have to endure being berated by other players for a name you came up with when you were 12 years old. Sony has officially announced that they will be testing the PSN Online ID change feature in a small beta that will allow users to change their IDs.

In a PlayStation blog post, Sid Schuman detailed the rollout plan of the name changes. The preview program will begin very soon and end sometime in late November. During the program, the participants will be able to change their ID as many times as they'd like. The first change is on the house, but subsequent changes will cost $9.99 USD / CAD for non-PS Plus subscribers and $4.99 USD / CAD for PS Plus subscribers. The name change option will be available through the Settings menu of your PlayStation or via your account's profile page. Following the change, you will have the option to display your previous ID alongside your old, so as not to confuse your friends.

It isn't all sunshine and roses, though. While the feature is going to be compatible with all games published after April 1, 2018, should a player want to go back and play games or applications published prior to this date, they may encounter game-breaking errors due to how the original PSN ID had been tied to their account. That goes across the board for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita. If a user encounters errors playing these games and would like to bypass the issue, they will be able to revert to their original ID for free. PlayStation will, however, provide a list of guaranteed compatible games published prior to April 1, 2018.

A full rollout of the name changes will come to all users in early 2019. In the meantime, feel free to share the worst PSN names you've seen, or even your own bad PSN name, in the comments below!
