Guide Duration: 5min. read, 25 – 45 min. playthrough
Skyrim is a fantasy role-playing game on the cover and in its description, but in its heart the game is so much more than that. Filled with the common tropes of fantasy games such as: dragons, dark elves, magic, swords and shields the game is a fantasy masterpiece. But in its quests and lore, Bethesda manages to add other genres into the game. There’s romance in the marriage system, a little bit of mystery in the serial killer terrorizing the streets of Windhelm, but who would’ve expected horror in Skyrim?
In the ancient city of Makarth lies a dark and horrific tale, one which you can have the pleasure or misfortune of playing through. If you're a fan of both horror and Skyrim then read the rest of this Skyrim House of Horrors Quest Guide and enjoy a tale of both fantasy and daedric horror. In the end, you will find the Mace of Molag Bal and acquire one of the strongest weapons in the game.
Skyrim is available for purchase on: Playstation Store and Amazon
1. Find the abandoned house in makarth
To begin the quest, enter Makarth. If you haven’t found it yet you won’t have the ability to fast travel. Your best option is to find a carriage driver and pay the small fee to have him take you there. Upon entering Makarth, if it’s your first time in the city, a man will randomly murder a woman in the street. He is a Forsworn supporter, and you will hear talk of the citizens' fear of the fanatic Forsworn cult. At the entrance of Makarth, head west and up the stairs. After staying in the city for awhile or simply waiting for enough time to pass, you’ll see a man in robes asking about an abandoned house. His name is Vigilant Tyranus. He says the house has been used for Daedra worship and asks for your help to clear it out. Accept his request and enter the abandoned house.
Follow him and head downstairs. There is a locked door which you won’t be able to open. Soon a demonic voice will tell you the worshipper (Vigilant Tyranus) is weak and instructs you to eliminate him. Upon trying to escape you’ll realize the entrance door is locked and your only choice is to kill or be killed. Tyranus will turn on you and attack you, forcing your hand. The house turns dark and bleak like a horror film.
2. Meet the Demonic Lord Molag Bal
After defeating Vigilant Tyranus, the voice will instruct you to head downstairs to claim your reward. Down there, you’ll find a rusty mace on a pedestal. Try to pick it up and you’ll be instantly trapped in Molag Bal’s cage. The daedric prince, Molag Bal, will ask you to help him restore his power and capture a priest who has desecrated his altar.
3. Find the Priest
Travel to Broken Tower Redoubt which is East of Makarth and West of Solitude. Clear the place out and defeat all the Forsworn within it. The priest named Logrolf the Willful, a priest of Boethiah, is held captive at the top of the base. Defeat the Forsworn mage at the top of the base to get the key to the priest’s cell. Untie the priest and set him free.
The priest will return to the abandoned house and will be captured by Molag Bal. Molag Bal will tell you to torture him into submission. Although this is a video game, beating an old defenseless man takes its toll on your conscience and heart. The priest is strong and will not submit no matter how many times you hit him.
4. Kill Logrolf
You will have no choice but to kill the priest. When he dies, Molag Bal will restore his life just so you can keep torturing him and you will have no choice but to do so. This time, the priest finally gives in and submits to Molag Bal, offering the demon lord his soul. Finally, Molag Bal will instruct you to eliminate the priest again so he can claim his soul in oblivion. However, upon finishing your brutal and heartless deed, a worthy prize awaits. The demon lord will give you the Mace of Molag Bal, one of the most powerful weapons in Skyrim. It does 32 points of damage, 25 points of stamina damage, 25 points of magicka damage and fills soul gems if the target dies within 3 seconds.
While this quest is not for the faint of heart, the spoils that await you in the end may be worth fighting through it. If you’re easily scared by horror or having to do tasks for the “dark side”, simply turn off the volume during this quest and turn on the subtitles in the dialogue options of the game.
