Sony E3 Press Conference Review

On the third day of E3, the industry powerhouse known as Sony came through with their own E3 2018 press conference. How did they fare against Microsoft and the other conferences? Let's break down all the glorious details.

Sony E3 2018 Press Conference Review!
Sony had yet another incredible conference at this year's E3 event. They had to follow other industry giants such as Microsoft and Square Enix just to name a few. Each conference so far has been spectacular but Sony clearly saved their best reveals, trailers, and gameplay demos for their event to truly wow their gigantic player fanbase.

Sony's Event Kicked Off With A Jaw-Dropping Gameplay Reveal For The Last Of Us Part 2
The conference began with Shawn Layden, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios taking the stage at a nearby church close to the E3 headquarters this year. He introduced the event and the first guest onstage, Gustavo Santaolalla. He played music from the upcoming The Last Of Us Part II. This was an awesome transition into a brand-new trailer for the game featuring a grown-up Ellie. The trailer was jaw-dropping, to say the least as this title looks to one-up the original masterpiece in many ways. It's clear the folks over at Naughty Dog know what they're doing in terms of narrative storytelling and graphical design.

The trailer then transitioned directly into brand-new gameplay as adult Ellie took on not only some bandits near her camp. The game has taken even more of a strong stance on stealth and what it can do for players if used correctly. This portion was my one of my favorite parts of the conference by far and Sony starting with such a juggernaut title was a very smart choice. The game is even more beautiful than even the PS4 re-release of the first game; brimming with grime and overgrown vegetation.

The conference was interesting as there was a small talk back with the developers and other important Sony executives. This gave a bit more insight on the games but was a little odd in terms of what people expect from most press conferences. These bits were nice but felt like the coverage one might see from different media outlets which personally pulled me out of the experience just a bit.

Alongside these fireside chat-like moments were trailers for other big name games that will be available on PlayStation 4 as well. This was nice to see but also made me feel as though Sony had their own press event that was only them and nobody else. The way it was put together felt like they had their own news outlet.

Sucker Punch's Ghost Of Tsushima Had A Breathtaking Gameplay Debut!
The conference continued with deep dives into Spider-Man, Death Stranding, and of course Sucker Punch's new title Ghost of Tsushima. Each game received jaw-dropping trailers showing off gameplay and details about each title. It's clear that Sony is doing everything they can to support these developers making incredible and well-produced masterpieces exclusive to their home console. This means Microsoft and Nintendo will need to step up their A-game if they want to keep up.

There were also multiple surprise announcements such as the psychic combat game Control and the impressive Resident Evil 2 remake and Nioh 2There was also a brand new trailer for
Kingdom Hearts 3  that actually took my breath away. I'm somewhat biased towards Kojima and his legacy however so for me Death Stranding was the standout highlight of the press conference overall. It's clear that imaginative and creative games are at the forefront for Sony.

Overall I think that the conference was well put together and quite informative on what to expect soon from our friends at Sony. Although it was strange to see the portions with talk-backs this did not distract overall from the experience. It's clear that the developers creating for Sony are doubling down on ways to immerse players in worlds that are deep and immensely engaging. I think Sony knocked it out of the park with their conference and deserve much in the way of accolades.
