Star Wars: Rey’s Parentage Could Still Change

After the release of the recent Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, which was directed by Rian Johnson, debates regarding the film have continued. Many fans loved the new direction of the film, but some thought Johnson's attempt ruined the plot lines set down by JJ Abrams in the Force Awakens. Whatever your feelings on the The Last Jedi, things could still change.

Star Wars: Rey's Parentage Could Still Change
One of the main talking points of the The Last Jedi, was most definitely Rey's parentage. Fans theorised the possibilities of Luke Skywalker, Obi-wan Kenobi, Han Solo, and even Emperor Palpatine being the parents of Rey, but nobody expected Rey's parents to be nobody. In the film Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, said Rey's parents were junk traders from the planet Jakku, who possibly sold her for alcohol money. Is that the final word, though? According to Johnson, not necessarily.

"Anything's still open, and I'm not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it," he tells The Huffington Post. "The easy thing would be, 'Yes, your parents are so and so and here's your place in the world. There you go,'" he says. "The hardest thing she could hear would be […] 'No, you're not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You're going to have to find your own place in this world. Kylo is going to use that even as leverage to try and make you feel insecure, and you're going to have to stand on your own two feet."

It could be argued that Johnson's controversial decision makes Rey a stronger character, but many fans still believe it goes against the original Star Wars storyline of the Skywalkers – set down by George Lucas. Regardless of the answer, Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, says Episode IX will be her last appearance in a Star Wars film, so it is highly likely Rey's character will reach some form of conclusion.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be in theaters on December 20th, 2019. But, in the mean time fans can enjoy Solo: A Star Wars Story, which arrives on the big screen on May 25th 2018.
