3D Rudder Fixes Movement Woes In VR

When you see the words "3D Rudder", it’s difficult at first to imagine exactly what that could mean. Is this something to do with a boating game in VR? Not exactly. Like a rudder on a boat, the 3D Rudder product sits underneath the player’s feet and acts as a kind of joystick. For anyone who owns a VR headset of any kind, this is great news.

Players with any experience of Skyrim VR or The Solus Project for example, will understand that a VR game dependent on motion controllers often depend on buttons for thirty degree snap turns. While this can be a good thing, what with sudden movements less likely to cause the nausea inducing smooth camera movement, some players may want a smoother and more responsive move-set available to them. After all, we don't all feel instantly ill with smooth VR camera control. It's going to come in handy. Especially for fast paced shooters like DOOM VFR.

In a recent press release, the team at 3D Rudder made sure to let us know that their product is fully compatible with DOOM VFR and Fallout 4 on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift for PC owners. We have yet to learn whether this technology will become available for PlayStation VR. Although, from what we’ve seen, if you’re one of the lucky few with the right set of hardware for the 3D Rudder, it looks like a literal game changer.

Setup is ridiculously simple as well. All you’ll need to do is plug the 3D Rudder into your PC via USB. With VR blowing up in the games industry, more and more people are jumping on board. With this simple accessory, VR movement woes can be well and truly fixed which means credit is to the 3D Rudder team. It’s certainly a far cry from the Cyberith Virtualizer, seen most commonly used with Skyrim as little as three years ago.

The Cyberith Virtualizer was a hefty piece of kit that admittedly worked well but demanded a lot of technical savvy to set up. You’d also need the equivalent space in your home to set up a treadmill… In just three years time, the equivalent tech has already shrunk to the size of a feet friendly joystick. Makes us wonder where VR will be in the next three years.
