5 Tips for Returning to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Before Skyrim there was Oblivion and before Oblivion there was the critically acclaimed masterpiece of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Released on the Original Xbox and PC, Morrowind was revolutionary in many ways. If you liked Skyrim and aren’t so picky when it comes to high-definition graphics, Morrowind is a must-play. Here are some tips for newcomers or for past players who might be a little rusty.

1. Before You Become an Official Citizen Steal As Much As Possible

In the opening of Morrowind the player goes through the age-old prologue of choosing a race, appearance, star sign, etc. During this stage in the game the player has not yet become an official citizen and thus cannot be sent to jail. If you are caught, all you simply have to do is drop the item and the guard will let you off with a warning. Then when the item is on the floor you can pick it up again and it will no longer register as a stolen item.

After signing your papers, grab this plate on the office shelf, as it is worth around 600 gold, a good amount of starting cash.

2. Find the Hidden Key and Loot The warehouse

After signing your papers and taking the limeware platter, proceed through the first building, looting whatever you can carry for resale later on. Then you will enter a courtyard and then a second building where you will be told your duties. On the shelf behind the official there is a key to a warehouse filled with weapons and items for you to loot. Repeat the same process you did with the limeware platter, picking up and dropping the key on the floor. Once leaving the office, the door directly across from you when you exit the building is the warehouse.

3. Start by fighting smaller monsters

And when I say small I mean tiny. Fight the tiniest monsters or animals you can find, as they will still take quite a lot of strikes to subdue. A good place to start are with “scribs” and “kwama foragers” as they are easily found throughout the starting areas and can be easily killed to help you level up your skills.

 4. Kill the khajit in balmora

Balmora is the first city you should visit and in that city is a Khajit named Ra’Virr. His store and home is right next to the Mages Guild. He is not so powerful and quite easily killed even with low level stats. Make sure you have enough healing potions, scrolls or items before fighting him or have the auto-health code in place. (For the original Xbox you press “black, white, black, black, black” in the stats menu while highlighting your health bar and then press “a”). Once you kill him you will have full access to loot his large stores of enchanted and non-enchanted weapons. Keep what you want to use and sell what you don’t need for a healthy profit!

5. Join the thieves guild

While you’re in Balmora, do yourself a favor and join the Thieves Guild. The Thieves Guild has an easy trial task and you will then have access to Thieves Guild fences who are people that stolen items can be sold to. Many stores and traders in Morrowind will not accept any stolen goods. As well, Thieves Guild traders tend to pay more.
