In a call to investors following the Q2 earnings release, EA were asked if the upcoming game, Battlefront 2, will discounted to capitalise on swiftly approaching sale seasons such as Black Friday – which has become a phenomenon over the past few years. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said that because the release date of Battlefront 2 is so close to Black Friday, EA will not discount it then. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the game won’t be on sale at retailers. Instead, if you do see it on sale so close after launch, it will be the retailer taking the hit.
Despite this, EA announced plans of discounting the game near to the time of the release of The Last Jedi: “We will most likely discount the game like we did last time around the movie launch – maybe you’ll even see some selective discounts around the holidays, either Thanksgiving or Christmas. That’s the way the games business always has worked. And so if you see the title on discount, don’t read anything into that other than the fact that that’s the way you sell games in the holidays.” said Jorgensen.
It is quite intriguing that EA have announced this, as it may cause players to wait until Christmas period to get the game, when it is a much lower price. Battlefront 2 is set to be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 17th 2017.
