You will never guess that Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is a game that is six years old if you refresh your game with some of the mods on our list that blow even the Special Edition out of the water. So let's dive into its amazing game world with the best immersion mods.

Top 10 Skyrim Immersion mods

We bring you the next list in an overview of our favorite Skyrim mods across many categories. This time, we spotlight immersion mods that will make the world of Skyrim feel more realistic and alive.

Be sure to check out our other Top 10 Skyrim mods covering homes, magic, graphics, weapons and armor mods.

10. Dead Body Collision Fix & Dual Sheath Redux

Dual sheath & Dead body collision mod
Starting off with simple yet very impactful immersion mods. Dead Body Collision fix mod ensures that you no longer pass through dead bodies as if they don't exist while dual sheath redux lets you customize how your character sheathes weapons. You can change the placement of weapons, have multiple weapons visible on your person, and much more. Some weapons like staves, when sheathed previously disappeared into thin air, are now fully visible on your character.

9. Frostfall - Hypothermia Camping Survival

Frostfall mod
Skyrim is a harsh place. Or at least it should be. You shouldn't be able to climb the top of the highest mountain in a blizzard wearing sleeveless iron armor and live to tell the tale. Well, with Frostfall, you won't be able to. This mod tracks your exposure to weather conditions and the environment, makes you worry about staying warm and dry and it integrates these systems into weather, armor, clothing and much more.

8. Hunterborn & Campfire - Complete Camping System

Hunterborn & camping mod
Skyrim is a great place to be a hunter. However, the vanilla hunting is not very immersive with the system being as simple as kill/loot animal. So hunterborn adds options for skinning, field dressing, harvesting and butchering of wild animals without the use of loot menus. It has a ton of other options for foraging, brewing, cooking and a lot more. Campfire - complete camping system goes hand in hand with being a hunter and the mod will enable you to build your own camps in the wild filled with all the camping equipment you can imagine. It even comes with its dedicated camping skill tree.

7. OBIS - Organized Bandits In Skyrim & Immersive Patrols

Bandit and patrol mod
If you feel like Skyrim is underpopulated or like you are missing interesting enemies to swat - OBIS is a must. It adds over 2500 bandits to the world of Skyrim. Each of these bandits is separated into many different types that make the game more challenging and fun. Some of them are even uniquely named and have special abilities and epic loot. Immersive Patrols adds to the Skyrim feeling alive with fully functional, scheduled patrols of almost every major faction across all DLCs, including Stormcloaks, Thalmor, Imperials, Dawnguard, Travelers, Merchants, Bandits, Skaal, Redoran, Reavers, and Rieklings.

6. The Joy Of Perspective & Player head tracking

Skyrim camera mods
If you are sick of feeling like a floating head while playing Skyrim, Joy of Perspective mod takes care of that by making the player's body visible in 1st person. It also replaces the first person animations with customized versions of the more realistic 3rd person animations. Player head tracking, on the other hand, will make your character face the person that is speaking to him so you no longer feel like your character is a maniac, staring into the wall while an NPC is talking into his ear.

5. Guard Dialogue Overhaul & Immersive Player Dialogue

Skyrim dialogue mods
Guard Dialogue Overhaul is a mod that adds more options when conversing with guards. It also unlocks most of the existing guard dialogue earlier in the game and mixes it up a bit by making guards behave more in line with your deeds. From the initial mockery to respect and nervousness later when you are a certified Dragonborn. Immersive player dialogue mod, on the other hand, changes the in-game dialogue by making it a bit more medieval and appropriate. So for example, where in vanilla your would say..."I'm looking for work." after installing the mod, you will say..."I hear a Jarl is in need of aid...what needs to be done?

4. Real Shelter

Skyrim shelter mod
Such a simple yet so effective mod when it comes to immersion. When a player goes under shelter, rain and snow will stop ghosting through solid objects. Simple as that. It does wonders for the in-game feel and you will be left scratching your head at the fact that Bethesda didn't include something as simple and impactful as that.

3. Open Cities Skyrim & Immersive hold borders & Distinct Skyrim Landscapes

Skyrim world immersion mods
World immersion mods combo take the second spot. Open Cities aims to bring back the lack of loading screens when entering towns seen in TES III: Morrowind, while immersive hold borders mod adds towers and guards along major roads and borders of different Skyrim holds. To top it all off and further differentiate different holds there is the distinct Skyrim landscapes mod. It affects Hjaalmarch, The Pale, Winterhold, Whiterun, Eastmarch, Haafingar, and Falkreath by making small yet significant changes like adding or removing trees where appropriate, adding more enemies, objects, rocks, ruins and more.

2. Sounds Of Skyrim Series

Skyrim sound mods
You won't know how much sound can affect immersion until you install Sounds Of Skyrim series of mods. These are huge mods affecting sounds of the wild, civilization, and dungeons. It adds around 500 new sounds that permeate almost every part of the game world. Vanilla Skyrim feels completely mute when compared to it with these mods installed.

1. WARZONES 2015 - Civil Unrest & The Honored Dead & Skyrim Battle Aftermath

Skyrim Civil war mods
Skyrim is a land supposedly at war. A war that you take part in. A war that is constantly thrown in your face during your playthrough. Well, by Skyrim standards, a girls night pillow fight is also war. Fix that with these couple of mods. Warzones 2015 adds a couple of huge, epic battles containing many, many NPCs spanning many, many acres of in-game ground as well as hundreds of smaller skirmishes across Skyrim. It also adds new weapons, random encounters and much more. Honored Dead and Skyrim Battle Aftermath add to the feeling of a war torn country by adding slain soldiers, ravaged caravans and hanged bodies to appropriate places across Skyrim.

So, that's our list of top 10(ish) immersion mods for TES V: Skyrim. Since Skyrim modding is still going strong and there are so many mods out there - this list could be updated in the future. What are your suggestions on mods we should include in the next list? Sound off in the comments below.
