Capcom Sales Doing Well Thanks To PlayStation and Nintendo

Capcom wants to grow their console market, citing strong sales on PlayStation and Nintendo platforms as great incentive to do so.

If a presentation from Capcom's quarterly financial meeting earlier today is any indication, the publisher has aspirations to grow their "consumer", or console, business, citing Monster Hunter World and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite as leading the pack.

This would involve not only sales from the aforementioned AAA titles, but ports of existing titles to new platforms (possible including the Switch, PC, and current generation consoles). The fact that 74% of the company's sales in the past quarter (which ended on June 30th) can be attributed to titles released in prior quarters is strong motivation for Capcom to continue disseminating its titles.


Additionally, it was shared that North America had overtaken Japan as the publisher's main gaming market, with 400,000 units sold in North America, 350,000 in Japan, 300,000 in Europe, and only 50,000 in the rest of Asia. Retail sales still surpassed digital sales but not by much, as 1.4 million physical copies against 1.1 million copies were sold between April 1st and June 30th.

Finally Capcom revealed that PlayStation and Nintendo platforms pushed the publisher's highest numbers at retail, while Xbox and PC platforms exhibited poorer performance. Indeed, 450,000 units were sold on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Switch, Wii, and Wii U whereas only 50,000 boxed games were sold on Xbox consoles and PC, each.
