There are many different universes and characters in Magic the Gathering, so Cryptic Studios have their pick of the litter when they make their RPG based on the uber popular card game. The developers promise a AAA game experience, in both gameplay and graphics.

Magic the Gathering AAA RPG Coming to Consoles and PC
The partnership of Perfect World Entertainment (Forsaken World, Star Trek Online) and Cryptic Studios (Champions Online, Dungeons and Dragons: Neverwinter) has announced plans for an RPG based on the Magic the Gathering card game. Stephen D'Angelo, CEO of Cryptic Studios, promises "everything from the graphics to the gameplay is being targeted for a truly unique AAA game." Beyond the fact that the game is being worked on, and that it'll be a AAA RPG, we know nothing about the content of the game.

Magic the Gathering is an immensely popular strategy card game that has been in circulation for 24 years. Along with the card game, Magic the Gathering boasts an expansive mythos, spanning multiple universes, time periods, characters and events. The development studio has their pick of the litter when it comes to choosing where their RPG will take place.

This isn't the first time the card game has been adapted into a video game. The card game has seen itself turned into computerized versions of the real life game, but also into the genres of real time strategy and even Match-3 puzzles. The game has never entered into the realm of an RPG, however, despite it being the perfect source material to do so.

Adding an updated: The RPG is actually going to be an MMORPG, according to a Wizards of the Coast (makers of the MtG card game) tweet.
