Nintendo has announced an upcoming Pokemon Direct for June 6th, 2017. The 8-minute info-dump will be available to view on either Nintendo's own site or on their Twitch channel. The Direct will start at 7 AM PT/10 AM EST. Speculation has of course started for what the Direct could cover. Likely Nintendo will talk about Pokemon's ever-increasing presence on mobile platforms, with titles like Pokemon Go and the latest Magikarp Jump. They may also cover Pokemon's future on the Switch. Nintendo could also talk about a third entry into the Sun/Moon generation, much like Emerald was for Ruby/Sapphire. If it were to come to the Switch, as well, that could be huge.
The qualification of the Switch has been something of a debate among gamers. Some say it's a handheld device, like a 3DS, while others contend it is a console with some portability. If a series like Pokemon, whose main series of games have always been on Nintendo handhelds, gets a new mainline entry on the Switch, that could settle the debate once and for all.

And the debate is not settled on Switch being a handheld, yet. We got Pokemon on Switch, but not the Pokemon game people wanted.

I’m surprised Ultra Sun/Moon weren’t announced for the Switch, as well as the 3DS. Perhaps they were worried about how it would look in the upscaled resolution. So the debate rages.
