Epic Games first launched Fortnite as a paid title last summer and it only included the game's Save the World mode. The studio initially planned to open this up to everyone and switch it to free-to-play sometime in 2018. However, according to a recent blog post by the developers, we can no longer expect this to happen.
The North Carolina based development company confirmed they’re postponing the free-to-play launch of the Fortnite: Save the World due to the team ‘‘working on a broad set of features, reworks, and backend system scaling’’ which they believe are needed for the change to happen.
Fortnite: Save the World is a PvE mode which consists of four players teaming up together whilst they share common objectives on various missions. A storm appears across Earth and causes 98% of the world’s population to vanish. All those who survive must deal with attacks from various monsters. The main enemies are zombie-like creatures called husks. Players assume the role of commanders at home base shelters and must collect resources, save survivors and defend essential anti-storm equipment.
For players who wish to play the mode right away, Epic Games are hosting a 50% off sale for the Standard, Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Limited Founder’s packs. All Fortnite founders who log in and play during the Fortnitemares event will receive both the Brainiac Jonesy and Skull Ranger Ramirez skins for free.
This will undoubtedly be a kick in the teeth for Fornite Battle Royale players and others who were hoping to play Save the World free of charge in 2018. However, Epic Games are taking their time and making some vital adjustments which they feel will make Fortnite's PvE mode even better than it currently is. If the Save the World can be as successful as it's PvP counterpart, Fortnite will become an even greater overall package and could well cement its legacy as the best free-to-play title in gaming history.
