If you thought Bethesda was done with Skyrim, think again. During E3 2018, Bethesda showed off the newest port of Skyrim. However, this port was not for any major home console, nor portable console. The Skyrim: Very Special Edition can be played directly from your smartphone or Amazon Echo, using only your voice. See what we did there? While the reveal trailer was a satire meant to poke fun at Bethesda’s own obsession with porting Skyrim to every device possible, the Amazon Echo/Amazon Alexa port is 100 percent real and 100 percent playable. If you’ve ever played Dungeons and Dragons or read choose-your-own-adventure novels, you’ll feel right at home with this Skyrim release.

If this sounds like you and you want to give the Skyrim: Very Special Edition a try, follow our quick 4-step guide on how to get Skyrim Very Special Edition on Android and get fusroda-ing in no time. So pick up your phone, grab a sweet roll and experience Skyrim like you never have before.

Step 1: Download the Amazon Alexa App

Start by simply downloading the Amazon Alexa application from the Play Store. The app is free and takes just a minute or so to download. The app itself needs a lot of work and has some bugs depending on your device and Android version, but once you get things set up, the Skyrim skill runs just fine.

Step 2: Login to the app

You’ll need to login to the app with your Amazon account. The Skyrim skill may not be available in all countries, so it’s recommended to login to Amazon Alexa with the U.S. or Canada Amazon account. If you don’t have one, simply go to Amazon.com and create an account.

Step 3: Enable the Skyrim Skill

In the Amazon Alexa app, games and other applications are called “skills”. To install/enable the Skyrim skill, click the menu tab in the top left corner. Next, select Skills & Games. In the search bar, type “Skyrim” and search. Select “Skyrim Very Special Edition” and click enable.

Step 4: Start the Game

Now that you know how to play it, the next question is: is it any good? The short answer is yes, it’s very good. Here’s why:

Obviously, the game was not meant to be a full release. Why Todd Howard and Bethesda decided to make an Amazon Echo/Alexa, choose-your-own-adventure, version of Skyrim is anybody’s guess. Maybe Todd Howard lost a bet with the CEO of Amazon; maybe the dev team at Bethesda got bored; maybe they secretly finished The Elder Scrolls VI and had nothing better to do. Regardless of the reason, they made it and we’re damn sure glad they did.

Skyrim: Very Special Edition can be played completely handsfree. Aside from the initial start-up of the game, the rest of the controls are done vocally. This means when you are doing tedious errands around the house like folding laundry or doing the dishes, you can play Skyrim at the same time. If you’re tired and want to lie in bed and shut your eyes, you can play Skyrim with the lights off until you drift off to sleep. In fact, this is the best way to play the Skyrim: Very Special Edition. If you give all of your focus to it you’re going to get bored very quickly, but as some background noise during your daily tasks or even on a road trip, this port of Skyrim is perfect.

Amazon Alexa automatically saves your game. If you do fall asleep while playing, don’t worry. Alexa has got you covered by auto-saving wherever you left off. Whether you were at a crossroads deciding which path to take or in the middle of a heated battle with a frostbite spider, Alexa will save your progress and automatically load the game from that position the next time you start it up. As well, Alexa will read a short last week on Skyrim recap of your quest journal just to get you back up to speed.

The game is fun and Alexa is hilarious. Again, if you’re expecting the same experience you get from the Playstation 4 version of Skyrim, you’re in for a disappointment. But for what it is, the Skyrim: Very Special Edition is actually a brilliant port. What started as a joke by Bethesda turned into a decent choose-your-own-adventure version of the game. Seeing as The Elder Scrolls series was inspired by the dev team’s love of Dungeons & Dragons, the Skyrim: Very Special Edition takes the series back to its roots.

The actual storytelling is pretty decent, similar to D&D. The quests are well formed, but the monotone voice of Alexa doesn’t do the prose justice. On the other hand, the fantasy world described through Alexa’s monotone and robotic voice is as funny as it is enjoyable. The game is more ridiculous and humorous than anything else. The sound effects are few and far between, but the sounds effects that are present are reminiscent of Skyrim’s full edition and brings bouts of nostalgia.

“So pick up your phone, grab a sweetroll
and experience Skyrim like you
never have before.”

Quotes from the game:

After you defeat a mudcrab –
“You are victorious…if only you had time to make some steamed mudcrab legs.”

Receiving a reward for completing a quest –
“The beekeeper hands you a lock of hair. Gross. Who does this belong to?”

Upon defeating a mage –
“The apprentice storm mage dies. He probably should’ve studied at Winterhold a little longer.”

Encountering a unique enemy—
“An adoring fan has been stalking you for weeks. He’s harmless but so annoying. He really needs to die.”

Beginning a new quest—
“You head out onto the road and soul trap numerous helpless woodland creatures.”

Yeah making a US account on amazon.com as suggested actually doesn’t do anything if I’m sitting in Germany. The game is still unavailable.
