Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops To Be Shut Down in Select Countries

According to a Nintendo Support page, 3DS and Wii U eShops across Latin America and the Caribbean will be shutting down on July 31st, 2020. These eShops were already “limited” by Nintendo to only support redeeming download codes for digital games. After the closure, 3DS and Wii U eShop users in these countries will be unable to redeem download codes. Additionally, users in this region will be unable to re-download previously purchased software after the closure. The main countries affected are Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Venezuela. Mexico and Brazil won’t be affected by these shutdowns. Nintendo said that they’re shutting down the eShops because “we constantly re-evaluate our business and make decisions based on a variety of factors”. Nintendo Switch eShops in the region will not be affected by the shutdown.

It remains to be seen why Nintendo will shut down the “limited” eShops in these countries. They didn’t go into specifics when giving their reason for the closure. It could be because many players have moved onto the Switch and Nintendo doesn’t want to support it. For players that still own older Nintendo consoles, losing access to purchasing digital titles is a tough pill to swallow. The eShop has a wide variety of unique games as well as DLC for popular games like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Nintendo has yet to announce any plans for closing eShops in other regions.
