is a side-scrolling platform video game. It is a part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and returns to the 2D gameplay and visual style of the original Sega Genesis-era games.
Returning to the style of the original Sonic the Hedgehog Sega Genesis games, Sonic Mania is a 2D side-scrolling platform game in which players control Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles as they race through various levels. The levels consist of remixed levels from past games, such as Green Hill Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, alongside original ones. Along with classic moves such as the spin attack and spin dash, Mania introduces a new move, the drop dash, which allows the player to instantly dash into a rolling spin attack upon landing from a jump. The game will also feature elemental shields and giant rings leading to special stages, first featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Sonic Mania was first announced, alongside Project Sonic 2017, during a 25th anniversary party event held by Sega duringSan Diego Comic-Con on July 22, 2016. The development team includes programmers Christian Whitehead, who had previously worked on the 2011 enhanced port of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, and Simon Thomley, who assisted Whitehead with the iOS and Android ports of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Series producer Takashi Iizuka described Sonic Mania as a "passion project" born out of fans' love for the classic Sonic games.
