Gameplay

At the start of the game, players can select one of several servers, nicknamed "ships," to play. Players create and customize theircharacters to be used in the game. The name, gender, race, character class, body features, and facial features are available for customization during the character creation process. There are various races available to the players in the game, which include Human, Newman (bio-engineered humanoid elves), CAST (manmade androids), and Dewman (species that contains recessive Darker genes in them). Players also pick one of four starting classes: Hunter, Ranger, Force, and Braver. Classes are interchangeable after creation. When players are finished creating their avatar, they begin playing in the tutorial and the story's prologue stage.

Interface

The user interface and controls are similar between the PC and the PS Vita. By default, players can play the game using a mouse and a keyboard, but may also play the game using an Xbox 360 Controller. The player's Character ID, Health (HP) and Photon Points (PP) are displayed at the bottom left corner of the screen. At the bottom of the screen, the sub-palette may contain consumables, class active skills, Technics and Photon Blast. The mini-map is located at the top-right corner of the screen. When a target is acquired, the top-left corner of the screen displays the information and status of the target.

The chat interface contains many varieties of customization. The chat log displays chat messages left by players and NPCs. The player can also display Symbol Arts, images imported or designed for used in the game. Autowords can also be saved for quick use of chat messages. Chat commands can customize a chat in many ways for communication purposes. For example, a chat can be a thought bubble with blushes to display a feeling of embarrassment. Some words are censored in the chat log for moral reasons, though they can be bypassed by using a certain chat command.

Gameplay

Photon plays an important role in the game's battle system. During battle, the player can combine his normal attacks with Photon Arts (PA), special attacks using photon converted into energy, to perform a variety of attack combos. Additionally, the Force and Techer classes can use Technic, photon converted into magic-like spells through fictitious scientific means to assist themselves and their allies, or attack their enemies. Some types of Strike weapons, melee weapons can use Guard to reduce damage taken at the cost of some PP, or Just Guard to perform a counterattack at no cost.

In some Areas of the game, Photon can be generated by defeating enemies to fill up the Photon level in the environment. In return, Photon-sensitive effects (PSE) can provide bonuses to the players in that Area. When one of the effects reaches level 8 scaling, a PSE Burst can occur where enemies will rapidly appear for a limited time. This can be further extended by causing a different PSE Burst to form a Cross Burst.

Each player can have a Mag, a small floating droid that hovers around the owner. The Mag assists the player during battle through a variety of means, from support attacks to resupplying the player. Additionally, the Mag contains the Photon Blast of the player. The Player can unleash a Photon Blast when the Mag contained enough Photon in itself. A Photon Blast is a burst of energy consumed to summon an avatar to assist the player. This can range from a unicorn charging at the enemies to a fish leaving a PP regeneration field around the player. The player can generate Photon in his Mag by defeating enemies or taking damage.
