Introduction

You are an exile, a peasant, an outcast to your people. You are left tied to a crucifix, left to die. But you fight on, in a land that is not for the weak. Only the strong survive and Conan Exiles proves to test your survival skills. You are only given a flask filled with water and a note. There is a minimal story for your exile to only fill a portion of the questions you may have about why you are where you are. It's an open-world sandbox MMO which features plenty of players with you as well.

Conan Exiles is an open-world survival game that takes place in the world of Conan. Players hunt monstrosities, gather items in order to survive, and craft weapons. It is currently in early access on Steam and currently, this game has a large emphasis on early access. The game world is very barren yet, filled with much life. The design of the world is quite interesting as well, the geographical visuals are a new view as well.Just walking out into the deadly world do I realize how complex the surroundings really are. Funcom truly showed how attention to detail really does play out.

Performance

The performance of the game is sub-par for now. It's not greatly optimized yet and my computer specs greatly exceed the recommended components (R9 295×2/4770k). Usually, with time, developers learn from community support about optimization issues. Optimization isn't truly the issue here, it really actually is a little issue, with a few updates it'll be better than ever.

My average frames were from 40-60 frames, this is on all normal settings. If you compare this to a game like Arma 3 I get 200+ frames on all maxed out settings. For both games, I play in 1080p on a 144hz monitor. I did have some rendering issues as well with this game. Now if your computer drivers are up to date and your specs are at least mediocre you will have no issue playing this game as it is quite compatible.

Gameplay

Okay… Let's get this out of the way… Yes, you can edit the size of your male genitals, and yes, you can edit the size of your breasts as well. The breast option works for males and females, and if we're being completely honest I slid the size bar all the way to the right and maxed the size. I have to compensate for something and I'm glad this game was here to help. It is a fun little feature that doesn't get old.

From the moment I started the game, I realized that it is mostly like every other survival crafting game. Except that there is a twist on it, you put your faith into a god and get a perk out of it. For my god, I decided to go with the one that gives you a knife to start with. I, of course, picked this one mainly because of the fact that I sadly am a very toxic survival player. I enjoy the "bandit" aspect of survival games and I will admit that this game does give you that option.

The combat is a good feel as well, the attacks aren't too clunky and the shield and swordplay is fun. It isn't clunky with how some combat games are with quirky movements or shady hitboxes. There is a level of smoothness within the combat that gives it a good feeling when you strike down another player. The game doesn't have the usual issue of feeling sluggish or repetition. The problem with a sum of swordplay games is a not so great stamina system, which makes combat boring. The way it makes it boring is after two/three swings the combatant is drained. With this game this is not the cause, the stamina system is pretty accurate with realistic swings to it. The loot mechanics is based on gathering resources to craft what is needed. In order to craft things like weapons and armor, you must level up within the game and learn a recipe. For example, when leveling up you must decide on which ingredient to master, if chosen right, the trait will link to other ingredients as well. So, if you wanted to build armor you would have to learn the armorer recipe trait to be able to unlock the ability to create low-level armor.

When it comes to gathering, sometimes there is a need to hunt as well. The creatures of the game are quite difficult by killing you, not just killing you but destroying you, and embarrassing you in a sense… The predators also, for the most part, defend themselves making you fight for what you want. There is a sense of preparation involved with this game, if one wants to attack a deadly creature, they must prepare themselves with armor, weapons, healing items..etc.

For servers, there is a great and organized server browser for whatever game-style you're feeling. There are PVE servers which are for people who don't want to kill other people. There are also PVP servers for individuals who want to kill others. Other sub-categories are hardcore, easy, relaxed. So the game does give you a selection of whatever you're feeling. There is also, of course, offline single-player as well.

Graphics

The graphics of this game are above average for an early-release game. There is some great detail within the game the exiled look impressive. The bodies of every exiled are ripped and toned and the muscles look realistic, there isn't an extreme exaggeration of muscles on the exiled. Also, the graphic quality doesn't hinder when setting customization options of body parts/the face to extreme amounts. While in first person, you can see the incredible detail to the veins that come out of the exiled arms. It does a truly marvelous job of portraying what an exiled would look like, fit and muscular from facing the challenges of this land.

Even the grass you walk on is detailed as well, there is a level of complexity to the grass as it is truly shown how unkept it is. Although mostly set in a desert, the portions of the game that does have the jungle in it is greatly designed. There is a large amount of shrubbery and a variation of plants that would be within an actual jungle.

On to the more off-topic things, the game has great water physics, and also a tiny attention to detail, the sky actually moves. Unlike most games in which have a painted on a sky that doesn't move. There is also a great detail of the game while running in the desert you can notice how the wind shuffles the sand around, The game shows how a desert would actively be and how it would not be at a still.

Final thoughts

At first, this game seems like a copy of many other survival crafting games. Let's not even get started with the vast amount of titles available. The survival crafting genre has been beaten to a bloody pulp, every angel and new idea for it has been abused and already invented. But with this game, there was a different feeling to it. It isn't a bad game, it just has some early alpha bugs that cause it to be quite game breaking. There is a major issue of rubberbanding that slowly decayed my interest of the game. If you look past at the technical issue it is a game that had a shaky beginning

Because of the rubberbanding issue people have been avoiding the game altogether. I will admit, the issue is incredibly annoying and causes you to lose track of things or cause an issue of picking items up. I did come across one bug odd enough, which after crafting an ax the moment I unequipped it, it disappeared.
I will forgive Conan Exiles for now.

For this game, I say yes, you should play it and try it out, but if you can wait until the rubberbanding issue is resolved it'll give you a greater experience. Because who doesn't want to go out and increase/decrease the size of their genitals?
